W7 or W8.1

Also, if you have multiple monitors that are different sizes/resolutions enjoy Windows 8 change all the font sizes so they are massive.

Eh latest but by no means greatest - problem with the OS it seems to have been focused on a specific useage style and ignoring that not everyone's approach to the OS is the same. Can't wait til they move on to something better. If its your thing fine but rubbishing other people because you can't comprehend they don't use the OS in the same manner as you is a bit special.

Is around £70 still the cheapest for an OEM copy of Windows 8.1? Tempted to try the enterprise evaluation listed above but after the 90 days do I have to enter an Enterprise key or can I just buy Home Premium and use that key without another reinstall?

You'll have to reinstall.

BS, as said by everyone else.

To the OP, get Windows 8.1. It's just a faster, lighter feeling, better supported OS to Windows 7. No doubt that Microsoft messed up hugely by not including the traditional Start menu, however quickly bung Classic Shell or similar on, disable all of the corner gestures, and you've got the same experience as Windows 7, with all the above benefits.

Sorry, what?

You say its BS that you need to install mods then recommend doing just that...

Key figures Windows 8&8.1 up <1% in December whilst Windows 7 is up over 2.5%. People don't agree with you.

Windows 8 is very marmite - I have a bit of experience with every day people who have no real bias and its pretty even split in the real world 50/50 between people who love it and those who hate it, granted for some it might be due to not being the familiar environment they are used to but it certainly isn't that for every one - my mum for instance picked up android in 2 days (with 0 previous experience of anything other than XP) and was using the tablet someone bought her for christmas like a pro by the end of the week - but she hates Windows 8 when another family member helpfully put it on her netbook she couldn't get XP back on it fast enough heh.

Trust me, if you have more than one display connected and they aren't the same pixel density don't even bother.

I have a 22" 1080p monitor and a 42" 1080p TV.

Windows 8.1 will automatically change the DPI of the displays. This makes the zoom level on internet browsers silly. The text ends up massive and blurry. This CANNOT be disabled. I used a registry hack to disable it and the moment I rebooted it was back.

It's literally awful, made me change back to W7 instantly.

Windows 7 may not get as much support, but what needs doing to W7? It's already had all the work it needs doing too it. Yeah, W8 is going to get more updates but it bloody needs them, because it's awful.

EVERYONE I've ever talked to says they have no intent on changing to W8. I even offered a friend my P5Q, Q6600 and some XMS2 memory to upgrade his PC. He would have needed to reinstall Windows but didn't have his CD key. I offered him my copy of Windows 8 and he refused because of that.

Don't have a touchscreen device? Don't even bother, it will be much more of a chore to use than W7.

What you said is BS,Win8 is very customisable and I don't use any third party start menu button(its not rocket science),just remove Metro tiles you don't need or add ones you do need ,shortcuts for old desktop etc job done or even boot straight to the old desktop UI with Win8.1,not forgetting famous right click on start button for Win+X menu.

As to sales figures ,who gives a damn about those since I've never based any of my purchases on sales figures, its down to if I like the OS or not, rest can be damned as they say.

I say it again Win8.1 has better security, longer life span, new features, better DX support for gaming,no reason to stay with Win7 unless you are afraid of change.

Try being more constructive rather then just another hate post with stupid sales figures.

Companies aren't moving to Windows 8 or 8.1 as they have Windows 7 licenses already with their equipment, have had longer to test in-house apps with Windows 7 and haven't had the uncertainty which the windows 8 GUI presented, which is far less of an issue with Windows 8.1 now. I know of one large company skipping Windows 8 and planning to go straight to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7, but they're halfway through their XP > 7 migration so there's little point in them changing plans now.

Companies incidentally influence what many people use at home especially if they're less informed users who just go with "what work uses".

Windows 8.1 will gain ground, but since it's not a massive improvement over Windows 7 or 8 frankly there's little reason for those with Windows 7 licenses to go out and purchase 8.

However with new gear coming with Windows 8 licenses from day 1 you can bet people stick with it once they get their hands on 8.1 which frankly is Windows 7 with some very nice additional features :) Don't get me wrong I'd still remove the app store, but that's not going to happen.

I've asked someone in my gaming community and he said there is no issue for him either, even showed me a screenshot.

I game, I also overclock, not had any issues with any version of Windows and I'm currently on Windows 8.1. I would like to point out I skipped Vista entirely though :p

Why on earth would you remove the app store. There are a number of apps with better user experience over there desktop/website versions.

Is 8.1 easy to redirect folders, such as have an OS install SSD and a second SSD for 'my pictures', Is the library redirection easy and will it allow easy backups to external hard drives?

Library redirection was the same as in Windows 7. I use Synctoy to backup media between my storage drive and a NAS, I would assume it's just as simple with whatever software you've decided to use for backups?
