E60 535d - OptionsBMW is comfortable,

That is indeed a lovely car, although it's pretty far from me!

I'll reconsider how important the speed is to me. Although not that keen on the look of the SE I could probably get used to it.

It's hardly slow though. For me the other huge positives massively outweigh performance which is the only thing that E60 has going for it over a newer, better F10.

Cars seem to get considerably cheaper the further north you go which is rather annoying! I've set the whole weekend aside to look at cars so may make the trip however.

Don't rush into things, setting aside a single weekend to 'look at cars' is a good idea if you wish to buy a 6 month old Focus from a car supermarket but for something like this will lead to you overpaying or ending up with not great car.

You can have my LCI 530d for £12k too if you want. It's also under perpetual BMW warranty and still has less than 100k on the clock :D

That pre LCI F10 is stonking value and, to be fair, I would rather the 6 cylinder petrol than the 4 that replaced it.

Right, what are people's views on this 528i then. I'd be will to make the trip if it's good enough...

Seems well specced, quick enough I guess, newer gearbox.

So people, tell me about this car...

The 528i - the car that always makes you wish you'd paid a bit more and bought a better one.

He's got £17k to spend....

The E60, the car that always makes you wish you'd paid a tad less given it's fundmaentally the same as those in the classifieds for rather less ;)

Quite, especially as the facelift XF he apparently craves so much is hardly a huge amount more money, they start at 21k and will lose less value over, say, 3-5 years, than that 535d i'd imagine.

I'm keeping money aside as we're planning a garage conversion this year!

The cost of car is price paid minus value retained when you sell it+running costs, not just the price paid. Using this it's entirely possible (infact very likely) that a £17k 2008 E60 is about as an expensive car as you could buy.

Why not buy a car like maccapaccas for £9k and have a better garage conversion? It's still an LCI E60..

As an E61 owner I would say buy the newer shape car. The E60 range's values will plummet now. :(

Mr Fox's advice is good, and your approach to buying is sound, so I'm not sure why you'd consider the 535D anymore, as it is simply not good value for money at that price/age.

Made me smile, but, your budget is your budget. Couldn't you say that about any car, short of possibly a Veyron? :D

Above the F10 528i is the 530i, the 530d, the 535i, the 535d, the 550i, the M550d, the M5.

Above the E46 330i is the M3.

That is a very interesting way of looking at it, although, you could say that a similarly powerful specification of 5 Series would be an upgrade, even if not buying the newer model?
