Hi,

I am working on my first new build.

I'm a non-gamer, but using graphic design packages. Dual screen and high res are priorities. Seeking a quiet solution with a budget £750-£1000.

Currently looking at the below and would be good to get your views:

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £143.99
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 270 "BF4 Edition" 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £139.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD316G1600HC9DC01) £115.99
1 x OcUK Tech Labs - NZXT Phantom 410 Midi-Tower Case - Gunmetal - Noise Dampened £113.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £86.99
1 x Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99
1 x Corsair RM Series RM 550 '80+ Gold' 550W Power Supply (CP-9020053-UK) £79.99
Total : £775.03 (includes shipping : £11.75).

No monitor required.

Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome

The one glaring problem for me is the lack of an after-market cooler; the OEM one with the 8350 is ridiculously loud.

Something like this as a minimum would be much, much better:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler £14.99
Total : £20.96 (includes shipping : £4.98).

Secondly, why get the 8350 when the 8320 is exactly the same chip at a slightly lower clock speed? Makes better financial sense to go with the 8320

Also concerning sound, the Sapphire cards don't exactly have a quiet reputation. You can't go wrong with an MSI non-reference cooler card, for example. Their balance between cooling and quietness is superb.

I think you're better off with an intel build for graphic design work.

Most of the graphic design programs such as photoshop, illustrator and lightroom were single threaded. This means they don't benifit from multiple core CPU's, they rely on single core power.

This is not the full story any more. These programs have started utilising multiple cores in some intances but still mainly rely on powerful cores.

The reason intel is better than AMD in this repsect as intel CPU's have stronger cores while the AMD's rely on multi-core ultilisation. The 83** is basically a 4 module CPU with 8 threads. Each of these modules are weak compared to the intel core..

My idea would be:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM £169.99
1 x MSI Radeon R9 270X Gaming Edition OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £155.99
1 x Gigabyte Z87X-SLI Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £86.99
1 x BitFenix Ronin Tower Case - Black £69.95
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99
2 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99 (£111.98)
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 412S CPU Cooler £28.99
Total : £791.47 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I would be tempted to spend a bit more and get a much larger SSD and more RAM. I understand that some of these packages rely heavily on scratch disks and the faster the better.

Something like the 250GB as a minimum and maybe even go larger, + 16GB of RAM.

A bigger SSD is upto the OP, i just added the one he specced (the EVO would be my choice too). Whether he's happy spending more or not.

My spec has 16GB of RAM. :)

Its cheaper to get 2 8gb sets than 1 16gb set. :)

Great thanks for these comments.

Very useful to know that intel is better for graphics.

I am planning on using the SSD for the OS and graphics software with 2 mirrored HDs for data storage; hence the smaller SSD size.
For data storage I'm looking at 2x Seagate SSHD 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DX001) SSHD Hybrid Drive.

Was there anything wrong with the NZXT case? I like the styling and acoustic performance.. Also what prompted the change from the Corsair RM series 550? I have had good experience with Corsair PSU's but I don't know SuperFlower..

Thanks again :)

Personally i wouldn't bother with the SSHD, i'd just get a standard HDD. (or 2 for RAID 1, as you're suggesting)

The SSD element of the HDD will help load times but really you're better off just copying the data you'll be working on onto your SSD drive (C drive) before you start working on it. It will be quicker that weay and cheaper for you're mass storage.

Nothing wrong with the NZXT case, its a solid product. Im personally not a fan of the styling but i can see why people do like it. I just think the ronin is better value. Though the NZXT isn't a bad choice what-so-ever.

I've never really been a corsair PSU fan.

Superflower are an OEM company who have started doing their own PSU's now (these). They did the EVGA Supernova's... They are very good units. :)
