My Dad has tasked me to spec him a £500 new build for him.

He has stipulated he needs two dvd drives, he will be doing a bit of photo work and his music will be on it. He does seem interested in flying games so I will be donating a 7970 when I upgrade so he needs a psu that can power it and a case that it can fit in. I am also going to donate a monitor at a later date. I have some old xms3 ram for him that can be used.
I was looking at an i5 build for the on board graphics till i donate and also to use my old ram. With an ssd and a 1tb storage drive, blu ray drive and he also needs a keyboard/mouse wired and windows 7.

Many thanks

Yeaaah, £500 for an i5 build will be a struggle. Maybe go without an SSD for a while and get a £60 2TB HDD for the time being - you could always upgrade later if need be.

If you don't mind the hassle of re-installing windows at a later date onto an SSD then I'd drop it for now.

- Knocked the PSU up to a gold rated one.
- Removed SSD for 2TB HDD
- Removed Blu-ray for 2 Disk Drives
- Better Case

1TB & SSD comes in at £525 if he can stretch a little.

I have some old xms3 ram for him that can be used.

This is DDR3 right?

Its this ram 'Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit'
He could probably stretch to about £550 ish as I have been telling him how good ssd's are.

Yeah that RAM should work I believe - ThaReaper's build is very good, and adding an SSD will lift it to about £560.

- Dropped back down to a 1TB HDD & added the SSD again
- Kept the better case and PSU

The RAM above will be fine that you have, 1600Mhz would have been a nice speed to have, however will do the trick!

Thanks again. I will let him know and see what he says.
Cheers

Happy to help, if you can't squeeze the extra, then the 2TB Seagate build would be wise way to go for now. Or:

Cheapest I can get it with both the 1TB and SSD.

- Dropped the 24x drives to 20x & changed the case and PSU back.
- PSU is still a decent unit, but is bronze rated.
- Case isn't the worst either, but I like the NZXT personally & for performance.

Right, this is a thread revival. I have now convinced him to go for a new pc that I am building for him.
The specs are the same so an i5, ssd and storage, one blu ray drive, he is buying w7 and a monitor separately. He said he can go to about £600.
Cheers.

PSU is juicy, proper sunshine flavours.

Thanks Stulid, I am building it on the 12th of May so hopefully some stuff is on offer next Wednesday and it still has time to get to me. I just bought the 290x Matrix so I have released my 7970 for him to have.

I just ordered the 'Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11' on the daily special for the same price as the team group vulcan.

Just an update. I bought all the stuff and built it the other day. I went for Stulid's build but changed the SSD to the Samsung 850. No major dramas apart from I didnt know windows media player doesnt play Blurays so rang LG and they told me to use Anua player. All working excellently and Dad is very pleased indeed.
Thanks All.
