112 mile per hour on a push bike pedaling

He got towed to 50mph, so slingshotted really.

Still, that is some scary speed to be doing on a push bike.

It wasnt slingshotted. There are rules to stop them using the momentum of the tow vehicle, it needs to be done purely under his own power (after he is up to speed).

He is allowed to be towed to get him started because the gear ratio needed to pedal at over 100mph makes it very difficult to start moving initially.

Pretty interesting, he said at the end though "i want to do 200mph on a push bike".

Might be a tad ambitious :D

200mph obviously wouldnt be easy, but it cant be too far away.

The current land speed record for a bicycle is nearly 170mph i think.
(Guy's record was a 'commonwealth' record)

:)

Next he is going to break a speed record for hydroplaning a motorbike over water

Traveling this morning on the motorway, I just had a quick blast to test, I still can't get my head around someone cycling at that speed, modified bike in a slipstream or not

Guy Martin is awsome, I love his work weather it be boat building, TT racing, engineering, his northern accent, or speed breaking attempts.

Um.... this guy hasn't made it into the record books :p

The ~80mph record they are saying he has beaten is unpaced. That means the guy didnt have a vehicle in front of him making a slipstream. The paced record is 167mph (268km/h): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycling_records#Speed_record_on_a_bicycle

That is truly dreadful reporting from the daily fail

*edit*
actually, he may have set a country record depending on where he set it, or perhaps some other technicality because of it being on a beach and round a corner, but it certainly isn't a world record

It's a commonwealth record, which is still a record, and still in the record books. Technically nowhere does does the fail article stipulate world record. The program made it very clear.

I thought it was a great program. Guy Martin is an absolute lad. :)

Touch, OT (still bikes..) but which Canyon do you have? Guessing a road one from your location?

I think the previous record was 110mph and Guy set 112mph. Both records were motorpaced.

I haven't watched the program, i just saw the video of the article so you can see why i thought it was the daily fail being up to its usual standards.

Dumb question, but whats the difference between commonwealth records and world records. i thought commonwealth records were set at the commonwealth games, but I'm damned sure that cycling behind a car isnt a commonwealth game so that cant be it

Commonwealth records are set in commonwealth countries?

I don't recall them contesting "the balls out pedalling a custom bike behind a racing lorry" event at the last CWG. :p
