MSI 280x running very hot

Just installed my new 280x which was bought from here on special the other day and been running some benchmarks/playing games and it’s been getting ridiculously hot.

Idle it sits quite cool ~36°C but the problems start when I put it under some stress.

If I run heaven I can just about keep it under 90°C and stop it from throttling if I have the case and card fans on 100%. As soon as I start playing a game or mining it’s straight to 94°C within 2mins and throttling

I have even tried to have a desk fan blowing straight on my card and although it takes slightly longer it still hits 94°C.

How do I find out what bios version this card has?

Also if I attempt MSI R9 280X BIOS update to fix overheating and VRM temperatures will this void my warranty as this card could be going back. Again I could try to re-apply the heat sink but it’s not worth the effort if it voids the warranty.

Thanks,

Slack

The card is dual BIOS so if it does go wrong you can flick it to 2nd BIOS.

Post the serial number on the MSI forums to make 100% sure you get the correct BIOS if your uncertain. I flashed both my cards with a BIOS provided by MSI on their forums it was a piece of cake, flashed from within windows.

That temp is quite a lot higher than I'm getting with 2 x 280X's in Crossfire. Highest I get is high 70's on one card.

I think i' going to have to send the card back.

I have checked the bios version and it's the latest and the bloody thing still overheats when stock....

I've made alittle video of the temps while running Furmark. With a deskfan blowing on it I can keep them temps 88 - 89°C but within 5 mins of stopping it, it's hit 97°C before i stopped it and thats with the side of the case off.

Try the bios from rumourcity. It's an older bios which was only released to reviewers and never made available to general consumers. Works a treat for me. :)

i think you are right to send it back
i wouldnt be happy with that
something is faulty on the card i should think

Do you have a link to that? I also have 2 of these in CF for mining and I wouldn't mind undervolting a little to reduce temps.

What program do you use to measure temps ? as i have just installed a Gigabyte 280x windforece and its the first time that my small gaming room is roasting hot as i have never had that with all my previous cards over the years ! These cards must be very hot as i have an antec 900 case that has plenty of big fans in it

afterburner & gpu-z

I have exactly the same card which I bought from here a couple of days ago (so it should be the same batch).

I just ran fur mark after reading your post and mine is sitting at 84 degrees after 5 minutes. The fans are at 70% and all of my case fans are fairly low.

I would say that your one needs to be returned. :(

yours seems wrong. this car does run hot (check the reviews) mine gets to 80 under full load but thats the max.

i use a custom fan profile also so at 80 degrees the fan is only on 75%

Just got my replacement MSi 280x today (1st was DOA), seems to be idling around 35-40c ( warm room, girlfriends fault.. always bloody cold :P ) Gaming wise ( Guild wars 2 ) haven't seen 60c yet. fans at 40% still silent.

WAY to hot. it should not get over 70c with a 45% fan profile.

RMA it.

depends on his case if he has no side fan/mesh then the side of his case near the gpu whilst gaming/mining will likely feel hot to the touch.

these 280x cards run hot anyway

mine hits 82c mining with under volts but only around 70 gaming in bf4 etc with stock volts.

I've got an asus card though , I did have a gigabyte rev1 280x that I returned under DSR because it was 90c gaming with 100% fan speed

If you are mining undervolt if you are gaming return it and get a different brand that runs cooler or wait for the next tahti xl chips to be the only stock places have as they will likely run a bit cooler
