Scared stiff of flying!!!

What is it that makes you so scared of flying? I'm happy to answer any questions about it if you feel it will help you.

Trust me, it's fine.

I'm pretty much the same, i never flew until i was 21, back in 1998, i was scared before i flew, but at the point i thought, actually, what on earth was i scared of!
I've not flown since 1999 now though, and the fear has returned, i'm due to fly to New Zealand in December this year, i've decided to split the flights up so i go to Singapore, spend a couple of nights there then continue to NZ because i don't fancy doing the whole stint in one go. The only thing that's keeping me going and taking my mind off the flights is both locations i'm flying to are beautiful, and i haven't seen much of the world, i just know i want to before it's too late. Bring on December :D

Next time you are on the dual carriageway, open the window and stick your hand out. Hold your hand out flat. Feel how the air rushes over your hand and supports the weight of it. Then tilt your your hand down. Now feel how the air pushes your hand down. Now tilt it up. Now feel how the air pushes your hand upwards really hard.

Thats how a plane stays in the air. Even your hand can stay in the air when the air acts on it, so just think what you can do with a properly designed aircraft.

Thats why planes don't fall out of the sky.

I took my first flight in 2002 aged 58 on 777 to USA- was rather nerve racking at take off but once up it was like being in a train - couldn't see much but hearing sound of the engines was comforting -- Panic came when engines cut out suddenly but fortunately we were high enough to glide into Chicago -;) ;)

Dave :D

I know this is meant fo OP, but i'd like to answer this, it's the fact i'm stuck in a tube, 38,000ft in the air with nowhere to go lol.

Where do you want to go? If you catch a train you are stuck in a tube at 125mph with nowhere to go either.

not 38,000ft in the air though lol

I know flying is statistically a lot safer than any other mode of transport, that's keeping me going. I also know that once i'm on the plane i'll be fine, just like i was first time.

I'm not fond of flying either, which is a bit unfortunate as I have to get in a helicopter every two weeks to go to work..if I have to get on a plane I find that having a few drinks before hand really helps.

Alcohol...always the solution! Perhaps you need more?

Just watch Final Destination, it will put your mind at ease that if anything is going to go wrong, some American teen will have a premonition and you'll have time to get off before the plane explodes in a fiery inferno.

Exactly this. Man up and if needed, jump onto the wing and smash the fuel flap after a quick fight (where by one man - preferably not you - is sent through the engine), fall off the wing onto the tarmac, shout something (maybe just Yippee ki ay?), and light the trail, blowing the plane to pieces in mid air as it tries to take off.

Or see a doctor for some anti-anxiety stuff as said above. :)

Why are you scared of flying, flying the easy bit, you should be worried about not flying :)

Though yea, do you drive daily? Do you walk across streets regularly?

If you do, then suck it up, your already doing something more "dangerous" than flying on a regular basis.
