Advice: Upgrading from GeForce GTX-460

I think he will run out of graphics power before he runs out of VRAM for the 270x, the 2gb will be enough for 1080p. It won't for 1440p but I doubt he can play any games at decent fps with a 270x

Why do people say that? You take ANY game..... Benchmark it....... Chuck in a massive texture pack..... Benchmark it again..... The results will be the same.

Crysis for example, benchmarking the game with stock and high resolution textures produces the same frame rates despite needing extra memory.

Do not confuse TMU performance with ALU performance.

Next generation consoles are going to cause a massive increase in texture quality and with 4Gb the card will have enough VRAM to support them.

On the guru3d 270x review they advise a 500w psu but I think a good 450w like your one should be fine. I do think the MSI is a better card than the Sapphire one due to the cooler, which is pretty much silent on the Gaming Edition 270X. MSI always use good quality components as well so I feel they have better build quality and an extra year on the warranty. If you want to save a bit of money the Sapphire is not a bad choice by any means.

Also if I'm not wrong, if you decide to wc, the warranty won't be void with the Msi one as long as you purchase it from OcUK.

honestly you need more ram, but the 270x would be a good upgrade or look online for a 2nd hand 670/680 they go for around the same price and plenty of power
