Once in a Vectra CDti I managed to drive from Forfar in Scotland to London in 5hrs 25mins

Just goes to show that the trains are a waste of time.

Looking back, I must have been so so fortunate not to have been "clocked" on the journey, but its a nice little anecdote for the grandchildren.

Has anyone else beaten the trains in a car?

There are many journeys in the UK where road is quicker than rail. There are also many where rail is quicker than road.

Just to balance this out, Bristol to Paddington is 1hr 45mins by train and driving is 2h 30min at least on a clear run, which is rare. Plus it's not bad cost-wise.

I don't know. But I once beat someone who went on the motorway when I took the back routes. My journey was way more fun, averaged 24mpg in a VAG 2.0 TDI :p.

Nothing I can think of, but while checking how long a train from Southampton to Liverpool is supposed to be, I discovered some rather brilliant pricing.

Southampton to London Waterloo return: £38.60
Southampton to Liverpool 2x singles: £39.00 (on the same train via Waterloo)

Apparently it only costs an extra 20p each way to add 230 miles onto the journey. Good job rail companies.

You are comparing a fully flexible walkon fare (Southampton to Waterloo) with a fully restiricted non refundable advance purchase fare (Southampton to Liverpool).

Of course the pricing looks like that, in exactly the same way that if you turn up at Heathrow today and ask for the next flight to Singapore you'll probably pay more for it than the guy sat in Costa waiting for his flight to Australia, on your plane, via Singapore, that he booked 6 months ago.

They don't do restricted non-refundable advance fares for the Southampton to Waterloo portion of the journey otherwise. Doesn't matter how far in advance you buy, you pay the same as you would for walking up. I've tried different local stations and never found it to be any different.

Bus lanes make some of our local journeys quick.

When they're empty and during non fining times yeah. However people always seem to park on them. I mean, allowing parking on a red route outside of restriction hours is pointless - why call it a red route?!
