Scared stiff of flying!!!

I hate flying with a passion and it scares the life out of me. Being an ex Aircraft engineer for 16 years does not help. Knowing what all the noises are and not being allowed in the cockpit to keep an eye on things is hell.

"Wait... why are they moving THAT?!?!?!"

Hahaha... one of those situations where ignorance truly is bliss. :D

I aint to keen on flying but as the wifes family all live in the Caribbean and we go every year to see them i have to suck it up. I got 2 small boys so once i have them occupied i slap on the headset and watch whatever movies they have, or play games on the ipad.

Oh and i get as drunk as possible without being obnoxious, my wife understands i dont like flying and the boys think daddys funny when he cant talk properly :)

Haha excellent. My video gets taken down but not the gifs and "immature" comments :D

Exposure to what someone fears actually helps some of the time.

I know i should man up. Its difficult when it affects you so badly. Maybe i should hire the A Team to get me there!

Don't worry OP there is a new device they have just trialled and works -

Next time you are on the dual carriageway, open the window and stick your hand out. Hold your hand out flat. Feel how the air rushes over your hand and supports the weight of it. Then tilt your your hand down. Now feel how the air pushes your hand down. Now tilt it up. Now feel how the air pushes your hand upwards really hard.

Thats how a plane stays in the air. Even your hand can stay in the air when the air acts on it, so just think what you can do with a properly designed aircraft.

Thats why planes don't fall out of the sky.

as a person who will be in the air for nearly 30 hours in total between this wednesday and friday. this is very reassuring. but **** it, if anything does go wrong, atleast it will be quick!

Now turn the engine off and see how quick your hand falls down.

.

genuine lol

ftr i've no problem with flying though on a flight to ny i was sat in clear view of the wing and had to put the window shutter down after an hour as i kept looking at it and was convinced it was going to rip off.

May not be quick though!

Every time a plane I'm on encounters turbulence, all I think about is crashing on an island (like in LOST) and it makes me happy. However, if you don't like the idea of living your life on an unknown, mysterious island then I guess this won't help.

I have the same thoughts and especially when I know they are only stuck on with glue but I get over it by thinking "Oh well, if it rips off I'll be dead on impact".

I can assure you they are held on with some nice big bolts.... :D

747 Wings are bolted to the central spar. The bolts are huge about 5" and designed to stretch considerably.

i remember flying back from malaga with an ex and there was a delay, we were sat on the runway for an hour due to a problem.

the captain announced over the tannoy that an engineer had ''hit something with his special hammer and used his last piece of chewing gum and we're now ready to go''. the look on my missus' face was one of pure unease and mine one of pure fear.

All you need to do is accept that you have no control over anything that might happen whilst on a flight. There's no point being fearful of something that you have no control over.

I watched a documentary about planes and even played it back to a couple of friends where it said they were held on with special glue.

All Boeing planes wings are bolted (including the 787 Dreamliner)

The confusion is that a lot of composite materials are used in the make up of the Wings and these are bonded. The 787 uses composite in the main wing spars and many other areas but the actual attachment is still nice big bolts bolted to a central spar.

Some light Aircraft have Glued or Bonded wings.

Less scary for me then :D

Let's just hope his flying is more professional than his announcements.
