Is my Corsair HX650 enough to power the following?

Hello,

Unfortunately my machine froze the other night and on reboot does nothing but show black screen. It was probably about time I upgraded anyway.

I've been thinking of making a machine around the following components

Intel 4770
Ati r9 290
500gb ssd
2 x 1tb Sata drives

Is my HX620 sufficient to power this. It's been a while since I've had to build a system so I'm a bit out of touch with some of the current requirements.

Thanks

Bit confusing there as the title says HX650 and then in your post you say HX620. Either way the answer is the same, easily with plenty left for overclocking. Both are quality units built by Seasonic. The 620 has a single 12v rail capable of 600w and the 650 has a single 12v rail capable of 648w.

The only thing that could be a problem is the age. My Zalman 750w wouldn't power my GTX780 so i had to buy a new psu even though it was fine with a GTX670. That psu was from 2008.

Manufacturer says minimum 750 watt for the 290. I was in a similar boat to you. I was told it was sufficient but opted to buy an 850 watt.

It might be worth while buying a new one as it is old, but on the good side 650w will power that system no problem. Also if you ever want to crossfire 650w will not be enough you will be looking at a 1000w power supply. Hope that helps;)

Sorry. That was my fault with the title. The unit is the HX620.

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping it would be ok but suspected it would be a bit lacking with current requirements. It would be good to have a bit of headroom for future expansion of HDD's etc.

What psu's are currently well regarded? Is it still a good choice to go with a Corsair unit? I'd prefer it to be either fully or partially modular.

Thanks

You have plenty of headroom spare. That link i posted showed a total system power draw of 603w for a pair of 290's. Single card total system draw is around 370w.

750watt is to cover people that use cheap psu's the hx620 was a quality made psu in its day and even though it might be ageing a bit should still be fine. Would not replace unless you need to once you have tried your new components.

Thanks for the help and the quick replies people. The possibility of not having to replace the psu would be ideal. I'll give it a go and hope that it works. Just out of curiosity...is there any risk to the components if the total system draw exceeds the psu rating or will it simply not work?

Either the system would'nt power up or you would get a insufficient power message, although it is impossible for a single 290 setup to draw anywhere near the power your psu can output.
