My God Damn Computer Chair

After getting through three £100 to £150 office chairs in three years and being 12 stone in weight (before anyone assumes I put undue strain on them) I bit the bullet and picked myself up a second hand Herman Miller Aeron Chair and I have never looked back. It was and still is an excellent choice.

Where's the best place to get a second hand Aeron from? I noticed that there's a lot on ebay but I'm a bit dubious of ebay these days.

Now show the rest of it...

Not entirely practical

That thing is incredible!

You could always have a look on Gumtree. If there's one locally then at least you can go and take a look at the condition before you buy, and it will save on shipping costs too.

Thanks very much for such a positive response. I must admit, I was pretty drunk whilst creating this thread which is why it barely made any sense... oooops!

Apologies for thinking a high end chair was in the region of £80. I guess that's what happens when your a student with small pockets and big dreams.

By the sounds of what you guys (and girls) are telling me though, it looks like my best bet is to spend a little extra and get myself a better chair and just pay that alittle extra. Not just a chair but a recliner seems like a necessity from what I can gather from everyone here.

I'm quite surprised to see such a wide opinion when it comes to a comfy seat though. Usually you always get a group majority vote on a particular product, but in this case, everyone has a different taste. I'll check out the Ikea Markus and see how it looks. If anyone else has anything in particular, it would be awesome if you could chip in.

In the mean time, I'll snoop some old threads and see what people have got to say!

Thanks again people

Thanks for the heads up on this one. I've already checked them out and it looks like I'll be lucky to snap one of these up for any less than £200. What makes them so great? Looking at the pictures, they really don't look that comfy. Should I not let the looks deceive me?

They're very well made, very adjustable, and set up correctly promote good posture.

Seems to be a lot of chair snobbery right here. I've used a £50 Viking chair for the last 5 years and it's been pretty faultless.

It's not snobbery.
The reason these chairs are so expensive is because they are specifically designed 'Ergonomic' chairs. They are designed to be totally adjustable to suit each individual person.
They are a good investment if you are young and want to look after yourself and they become a necessity when you get older and have been using a cheap chair for too long.....

Well after only two months after buying what I believed was a high end computer chair it has already fallen to bits. Two wheels of snapped off and it provides no back support at all. At the time I paid around £80 and that was meant to have included a half price sale. Now I can see why the sale price was that good, the shop owner couldn't wait to get it out of his store!

Anyway enough of the rant. This is where I'm hoping you fellow chair commanders can help me source a new one. I'm happy to pay in the region of £100 and would even consider second hand if that was all I could afford within the budget range.

I just really need a comfy chair that provides a good back support. A chair that could last longer than four months be too much to ask?

Anyway people, I sure hope you guys (and girls) can help point me in the right direction. I don't think I could handle another day on this god damn rollercoaster ride of a chair!

Thanks for listening! :)

I would avoid worldstores, I bought a chair for about £80 from there and its bad, squeaks at about 500db every time I move grrrrr. I have "modded" it with some pillows and a blanket to provide optimal comfort though.

I've had my Ikea Markus for three years, and apart from tightening some screws recently, it's been perfectly solid and the fake leather is still in good condition. I sit in mine a lot (say an average of 5hrs a day) and frequently use the reclining thing.

It's a cheap chair but it's in no way poorly built for the price your paying. I wonder what you guys are doing to your chairs to make them break so quick.

Probably using them a lot more than 5 hours a day! I work on a computer so I'm probably on it more than double that, when you use a chair that much cheap chairs quickly degrade! At first they are comfy but after a year or so they are like a bed of nails.

I'm just going to come out and say that my HM Aeron chair is pretty much the be all and end all. It'll last you so long that it will work out as less than a tenner a year to own and will save a shedload on chiropractic bills in 15 years time.

It's not snobbery, it's sound consumer advice.

Buy cheap chair, don't sit like a slouch and sit in a correct position, wear comfy clothes and/or pillows if needed.

I've had my chair for almost 2 years now and is was a cheap-o one from Ikea. Don't really understand how you can break a chair that quickly unless you strap bricks to yourself and dive into it.

It's basic economics, cheap chairs are cheaply made. Crappy plastic moulding, weak joints, duff padding...

e: I weigh less than 12 stone and broke the last cheap chair I bought within a month.

Picked mine up from the classifieds on AV Forums - If getting one on ebay due to the size I would assume you were going to collect?
