hey guys,

i recently bought this game and im about 55 turns into the campaign, now here is my tactical map

i have marked the only way i can move my armies without causing problems with other factions, the army i have circled is now very weak and i will properly loose them trying to return to my settlements.

i attacked with three armies and all had 20 units each (two with champions) and also a ally army (was a very weak army) but i just cant seem to advance any more, everytime i do i just kept stamped on.

has anyone got any tips on how to defeat these gauls? btw im at war with three at the same time (all declared war on me lol)

my armies have balanced units, should i have a army of say two types of units? 10 of each?

if you need any info to help me please ask, ive been trying to advance for ages but these guys have caused it to stop! was doing very well!

thanks

Sounds like you're auto resolving fights?

If so, thats why you're being stomped.

Normally if i auto resolve a fight and lose it, if i play it myself i get a heroic victory. (not that im a mastermind tactician) but the auto resolve is terrible, its pure number based.

nope i only auto-resolve when its a obvious win, should i use a certain type of unit to tackle the gauls?

I've not got the gaul pack yet. I lost some interesting in rome2 and was waiting for it to mature a bit. This challenge interests me a lot!

I guess at this stage your best bet is to play defensively for a while, refine your cities and armies, when playing on the battle map, play defensively too.

It sounds like your armies are well matched against the enemy so terrain is likely the deciding factor and how you use it.

Balanced armies are nice but perhaps against the gauls you'll want more specific builds but to that I can't give much advice as i've not tried it.

Very tempted to grab this now though! sounds good. I bet a gaul based MP campaign would be awesome fun.

Sorry I can't offer more than that. I guess don't over extend is the key here. Good luck!

i also have not got the gaul DLC, im doing the roman campaign.

yeh i will do that, i have an ally in between them and me, so they should hold them off for a while, i also have a large attack, siege fleet sailing to their seas atm.

im going to try upgrade my army tech and increase all my town's sizes then try again
i will try having armies with heavy infantry, i know they get to them unharmed when in the turtle formation, some decent archers attacking as the swordsman advance may be useful as well

thanks bud

Stop making me want games. You may have to write off the stranded army unless you can get support there in time, but if the supporting units won't be sufficient then you're better off building infrastructure at home and sending better armies out together, and just let the stranded army keep them occupied for a few turns.

update

i forced march my weak army back and have reinforced them, i now have three armies next each other, all very strong and two with champions.

now i have another army on the way and should be there in 2-3 turns

i wonder how this goes

GLORY TO ROMA! :D

Recruit mercernaires if you can and if you need to, this will give you and expensive but immediate boost to your army numbers and as well, variety in units.

Its probably to late to go back and get these units now, but field artillery can be useful... especially to soften up the area you want to attack. Other than that its a case of knowing what enemy unit you are up against, you probably know all that from playing battles anyhow.

Very interesting campaign though, I had a Rome campaign where by I left my Northern neighbours to it and instead focused on Carthage and North Africa. It became a bloodbath with me up against Carthage, Novo and Libya... luckily for me the Tribes in more Central Africa were not to fussed with me and appeard to be content on attackign Egypt...

haha, im doing well now, im at war with 1 gaul faction atm, and i have a ally that is now my client-state :D

once this gaul faction is destroyed, i will sort my towns/cities out then advance towards the North some more :)

here is a update of my tactical map

so, as you can see, i have conquered a lot more now in the gaul area.
so her are my options, i have used different colour X's to explain better.

the Red lines are they ways i can move my armies
i am currently at war with the to areas on the far left with Red X's on them, atm i am neutral towards the Yellow X, im going to declare war on them and destroy them to get closer to the other faction (and.. well.. i must DESTROY! lol, anyway, the Blue cross is my ally that is my client-state, so whatever i do, they do as well :D the purple X i am neutral so im going to leave them alone for the time being.

Now on to the left side, as you can see i have X'd two factions Green, this is because they are both allies to each other so if i declare war on one, the other joins in, so im going to leave them along for a while as well.

the Blue faction at the bottom of my Empire is my ally but he keeps asking to be my client-state, i have refused about 4-5 times now because he is at war with Carthage, North Carthage and Libya (North Carthage and Libya are client-states on Carthage) so if i accept his request, i then become at war with all the area that i have Black X's on. So what im going to do is fight my way round the South East then get my allies (Greeks) to advance from the North East.

what do you guys think? or should i keep going North?

Aha, I started a new campaign as Rome a couple of days ago.

Opted for a different approach, moved up to take the Cisalpina province and strengthened my borders there in case of a Gaul invasion. Then focused on Carthage, enlisted Libya and Syracuse as an ally hoping they'd take a lot of the brunt. Headed west and took out Nova Carthage and moved my way back towards Rome until the Carthaginians were defeated.

Currently moving up the Hispanic provinces to meet Gaul again which should give me two fronts to assault them from. Have kept on good terms with the Greek factions so hoping they will keep themselves to themselves.

That, I assume, would be Syracuse, and they're right little troublemakers. In my first campaign (with Rome) the overconfident *******s managed to drag me into wars with everyone in the Greek peninsula and Anatolia. It all ended (badly) when Bithynian and Pontic armies landed in Italy with my own forces fending off Gallic attacks in the North and trying to hold on to Carthage in the South.

Destroy them.

lol ok, eveything shall burn!

ive had to stop playing as a bug has made my campaign unplayable :(

when i end turn, it finishes going through the the other factions but it then dose not let me accept the message box in the centre of the screen :(

disappointing i must say, been so excited to play this after work today... want to DESTROY MORE!! MY EMPIRE SHALL GROW MORE STRONGER THEN EVER!! :D

I started having this the other day, the accept button was greyed out as if it had frozen while loading, i waited a few minutes and it started working again.

it did not work for me, i left it for 30min in the end... nothing :( looks like ive got to wait for a patch before i can continue growing my empire :(

was really enjoying it as well lol
