Hello,

I have purchased a 55" Sony recently. As TVs are getting thinner the speakers on them are getting worse. Now I'm looking at improving this.

I don't want anything extravagant. Just decent sound with decent bass. I'm happy with 6/10 sound rather than the current 3/10.

Should I opt for a £160 soundbar or look at some decent £80 PC speakers?

with that budget i assume looks matter most so maybe a bar. yamaha have one on sale for 150 some places.

personally on that money id get an Aego M

why such a big difference in price?

why not spend £160 on pc speakers?

at this budget pc speakers would offer better SQ, the bar will look a lot better though.

if your after SQ get pc speakers, if your after an overall package get a cheap yamaha soundbar.

For £200 (only £40 more than the bar) you could get a yamaha receiver and 5.1 speaker package from richer sounds. I'm looking at getting it myself.

Yup, get yourself this:

Much better option than the sound bar or PC speaker option.

I'm actually very tempted to get this set, replace my old Yamaha non-HDMI receiver with this, and utilise my old AVR plus the included speakers to give me some half-decent speakers in other rooms in the house!

Yup that's the one. The only reason I haven't done it is a) I'm not paying, the parents are (arguably that's a good thing!) and b) well, the guy wasn't really helpful in the store when I asked about it which is odd for that shop. Told him I was after a basic upgrade from our broken AIO setup, so we can a decentish AV Receiver and 5.1 that will perform better than what we have without breaking the bank. Straight away he was trying to sell me £600 amps and speakers.

I think that because it's so cheap, the guys in the shop probably want to sell you more expensive stuff, because, well, it's more expensive and looks better on their sales ledger.

I bet if you just walked in and told them you wanted it without giving them the option of giving you their advice, then you'd just be given it without issue!

Very true, they're out to make money, nice about it or not I guess. I'll have a chat with the father tonight, see if I can persuade him to get the wallet out again.

The guys in Richer Sounds Chester weren't particularly helpful.

I've just bought that Yamaha kit, it is really good, it's so worth going for something like that, it made watching films at home awesome! Couldn't do without now!

Awesome. Thank you all for all your suggestions! I might opt to increase the budget but I just got a new place and spent like 6k to paint, decorate and furnish (almost 3k was spent on TV and sofa and armchair) so I just wanted to cut down.

At the same time I do what this system to last the life cycle of the 55" Bravia which I'm not looking to replace until 4K sets become more mainstream.

Cheers fellas!
