780ti's or 290x's for 1440p?

My logic is simple, i live for today, dont care about tomorrow to much, tho i keep one eye on it, im just to impatient :) id not base my buying decision on Mantle, its not a deal breaker for me, tho im intrested to what it can do and where it can go etc, but today its simple does not exist, now if your only game is BF4 then getting a 290 or better is maybe worth a gamble on the unknow, but in the bigger picture both cards would do fine in most scenarios, hard to pick a bad card just now, so dont believe the hype, either make a decision and the hard facts as they are today or be patient and wait it out and play safe ;)

What things are you referring to?

Everything that you've said Mantle will bring to BF4? Again, not looking for theoretical API benefits but actual tangible improvements.

I was being a touch facetious as of course there's no details yet. Apologies :p.

If you want to understand better the benefits of the API and what improvements and effect it will have on the things check out these videos.

They're all theoretical mate. I know what they are saying is possible to do with the API but the key word was tangible. As I said I was being facetious as I'm aware there's no details regarding specific improvements making the cut.

As for DICE they said that they'd never charge for DLC and that BF4 would run at 1080p/60 on consoles so yeah... I tend to use some salt with then nowadays. :p

I disagree regarding super sampling and looks like more like doing something for the sake of it as opposed to a real benefit.

Your trying to tell us higher IQ is just for the sake of it?

Ramping up the IQ via CCC/NCP is a game changer in oh so many titles.

I'd like to see how 780/ti's stack up against R9's with resolution scale set as close to if not 200%@1440p when Mantle lands.;)

You're* :p

In my opinion, I disagree. I've tried it on both and I didn't really think it made much difference in IQ in truth. I can barely tell the difference even in static screenshots never mind a moving game. But that's me. I didn't say it as an absolutist statement, I clearly said it as an opinion piece. :)

I feel sorry for your eyes, you're missing out. Resolution scale/Supersampling and Frostite 3.0/Mantle is here to stay and I'm pumped for it.

Did you see some of the screenshots i posted from NFS Rivals ? Hardly the best looking game but 170% supersampling made it look like i was watching a dvd or blu ray movie. I can't emphasise how nice it looked. When using resolution scaling that 4gb frame buffer will come in handy i think.

Check out the screens and see what you think. They don't really do it justice and im sure i lost quality taking taking them and uploading them but nonetheless here's a few. Those screens were taken when i had my 7990 btw.

Comparisons to normal?

My eyes are fine, they're liking the bump to 1440p or the bump to 120 Hz depending on what I'm doing :p.

You were telling me a while ago that Sleeping Dogs Super Sampling was massively improved in IQ over just High AA. I maintain that the difference in everything but performance was negligible. :)

Anyway we (I) am side-tracking from the thread. Forgive me, God.

I will reinstall it to take some normal ones, but its a big difference in quality. I might be able to crack the scale up further now i have more gpu grunt. Resolution scale is going to be in every frostbite 3.0 game which in turn means it will be in every Mantle/Frostbite game.

Is that game actually any good? Looks decent enough visually. Is it essentially SSAO? 4X equates to roughly 4K I know that much.

Good game but have some serious caveats. Game is limited to 30fps, however you can get around this and increase that limit. It does make the game harder though by making it faster. 35-40fps seems to be the sweet spot. I picked it up cheap (ish £19 on MM) so it was not too bad. Game has decent crossfire support but NO SLI support afaik. However one fast 780TI will be plenty.

I'm a bit confused as to what you're showing. Have you simply used down sampling?

That was using 1440P highest in game settings. However via a config tweak you're able to use Resolution Scaling ala BF4 and i had that running at 170%.

ah got yah, so it is essentially the same as down sampling via the config. That's handy, I've always had to use the Nv control panel for it. Normally just brings games to a crawl although I haven't used it in some time.

Its a feature of Frostbite 3.0 games so its here to stay. However NFS Rivals reeks of console port, badly. So it does not have Res Scale selectable via options. However as with BF4 the User.Cfg file works so you can crank it up and when you do it looks outstanding.

If it was me who was deciding between the two I would get a 290x, slap on a water block, overclock to/beyond the 780ti's performance.

Then to add you may have the benefit of a free performance boost in Mantle which is a bonus.....

Plus it would be cheaper.

Or just wait and see what Mantle does bring to the table, you never know, it may bring 780ti's price down if Mantle takes off.

But this is only my opinion
