The Highways Agency said the lower limit, which has been put out to consultation, was likely to remain for "several years".

In its document, it stated that the current use of the 70mph speed limit for motorways was having "adverse impacts on air quality" and that cutting it would reduce emissions.

It also said the change would bring "reduced congestion, increased capacity and improved journey time reliability for users of the motorway"

I'm sorry, but WTF ?

I'd love to see the evidence behind that conclusion.

Not for the change but isn't it just simple logic that states that a car doing 60 will emit less than a car doing 70? Or am I just being plain and too simple?

I would have thought it would depend on the engine/gearbox and where the efficiency "sweet spot" lies?

ANother hair brained scheme of nonsense in this pathetic country.

We need to remove all motorway speed limits like Germany, so you can actually get somewhere.

IF the gov lifted speed restrictions out of peak hours for instance, it would encourage more people to travel out of hours, spreading the traffic more evenly over the 24hr period.

Silly UK.

Would it not be a better idea to improve traffic flow through built up areas? Surely if we reduced the amount of time we spend in lower gears going over pointless traffic carming measures and other obsticles that local councils put in place. Would this not have a greater impact environment than reducting out of town emissions?

Surely Bernouille's principle proves that reducing speed of throughput will have the complete opposite effect?

Amen. Recently dumped three huge speed bumps (real sump killers) on a road near us. Never been any problems. Real shame. Now all the people have to listen to thumping and revving as people make their way over them. BAH.

Germany only has a few unrestricted motorways.

Decisions like this are financially based. It's simple - drop the limit, wait for people to not notice and sit down there with a speed gun.

"Emissions" are only used as a vehicle for taxation and generation of revenue.

Incorrect.

I drive in Germany often, the majority is unrestricted, however there are electronic variable limits when traffic is heavy or roadworks etc.

After these, you can do as you wish.

Look:-

The de-restricted parts are blue.. i.e the majority.

Fair enough, but it does show they obviously dont believe in unrestricted speeds wholesale, otherwise the whole motorway network would be unrestricted, not 60 or percent. Interesting, but anyway, i digress:)

Half of that section is already a 50 limt atm for central reservation repairs, about 15 miles of it up to the M18 turn off anyway. I don't like this idea though.

Seems to me like almost all the motorway network around here is 50 anyway these days. I hate it, they are never working on the road and it seems to take ages to get anywhere.

The consultation is open.

There's a joke about getting together a mass bunch of 2-stroke motorcycles to ride that patch a few times in protest if they bring this in.

It's the Highway Agencys approach to complying with EU mandated emissions and from what I can see it is as big a scam as the EU tyre and NEDC ratings

No, emissions at 70mph are higher because that's the only damn time the dpf gets hot enough to burn off the snot that built up crawling around town.
