By the time you sell the cards and pay any fees, wouldn't it not really be worth the hassle? The 780 is a beast, you know it works well, no dual cards issues to worry about. I would just keep the 780..

Tell him you are willing to do the swap, but make sure you also tell him that all you are going to do is sell them and then buy something else anyway, that way if he wants to do it because he cannot be bothered to sell them himself you have no moral issues to worry about, as you will actually be doing him a favour.
