Hi guys,

I'm getting to that stage now where I'm choosing my first car, Is compare the market a good website to start looking for insurance quotes or do you have any good recommendations ?

Thanks :)

I use the price comparison sites to get an idea of which companies are going to offer the best prices and then go direct to them for a quote.
Quite often a direct quote will be better than what the comparison sites can offer.

I use Go Compare as a good basis and then work some other sites from there.

Generally though, there's only two or three insurance companies that come close with quotes that I'd consider, and I simply use the comparison sites as easy access to my old and future quotes.

I've actually found the opposite.

RAC quote through Confused.com: ~£800
RAC quote direct: ~£2,100

Use a comparison site to get a basis of cost and then ring the cheapest to see if they will go any lower.

Insurance is one big juggling act.

What do you guys think about these company's that offer black boxes to help reduce insurance ?

Ive never liked them as they can be very restrictive. If you fit the rules they run to then go for it, but its not normally that big of a difference.

However it may of changed since I last looked.

A colleague of mine uses one of these, I think his insurance provider is called "drive like a girl". He certainly doesn't, and he said that's the cheapest he can get insurance on his Lexus IS300 (at 21).

I've never looked into them personally.

I'm currently looking at getting a telematics insurance policy. I used all the comparison sites, was getting £1800+ for standard quotes, and got a telematics just under £1600. I also gave Direct Line a ring, they quoted me just under £1500 for standard, and £1200 for telematics!

Can I ask how old are you ? :p I just tried to get a quote for direct line online and it came up with £2500

Also what car are you getting quotes for ?

Are you 17 insuring an M5?!

In all seriousness, what are you trying to insure, and how old are you? Have you tried adding other people to the policy? My girlfriend brings my premium down. Only reason I keep her around :D

I am 17 yeah, I'm trying to insure a 1.1 peugeot 106, the £2500 was from direct line, the cheapest I've found so far is £1880 with a black box fitted, I've tried adding others aswell which does help !

Drive Like a girl are not at all restrictive and do this in a good way; they repay some of your insurance if you drive well, keep it if you don't. They were offering me hilariously cheap quotes at 21 last year.

I had a 106 as a first car, cost me £700 for the car and £1300 a year for insurance.

That was 10 years ago, glad to see inflation is alive and well!

For the last 2 years, they have been the cheapest for me, and you get cashback too. It shows you the price you'll pay before cashback and after.

Also you can earn cashback on any other internet shopping you do, booking holidays, mobile phone contracts etc. I've made £150 in about a year, with very minimal spending really.

£367 to insure a Focus ST at 25 years old :), I've yet to find any other comparison website to beat it.

I'm 22 looking for insurance on my first car (Lexus IS250) I have had my license for over 2 years though, which is probably what makes the difference (even though I haven't had an insurance policy & therefore no no-claims)
