Chaps,

I'm looking to get change my Aygo 1l in the near future, for something bigger and, frankly, better built! I am self employed and do around 18k per year.

I am looking for something that is fairly economical, reasonable to insure (I'm 21). I need a fairly big boot, I have thought about estate sized cars but I imagined they will push my insurance up a lot, due to my age.

What would you recommend? Petrol or diesel?

The aygo is an 09 reg, with 37k on the clock. I'm looking to spend circa 9k.

Many thanks!

Absolutely right - not worried about performance in a sense. This car is purely for my business use... a nice personal-use car will come in a few years time, when insurance isn't such a consideration.

If you still want to pay £30 a year on tax like you do with the Aygo, look for small engined diesels. Something like the 2010 Skoda Octavia with the 1.6 is only £30. And with the smaller engine, might be friendlier on your wallet in regards to insurance.

Well, you'll have a lot to choose from then. Although 18k isn't huge mileage, it's just enough to benefit from a diesel, of which there are an enormous number nowadays. There's a huge amount of choice in your budget - personally I'd go for a Mondeo diesel like the one I linked, but an Octavia, Superb, Exeo, Passat or similar would also be fine. Avoid premium marques like BMW or Mercedes as you don't seem to care about such things and they're likely to cost more to run.

It might be worth spending a day looking around one of the huge car supermarkets - as much as they're slated on forums, they're a good way to directly compare a lot of different cars, and they'll be full of the kind of cars you're looking for.

Thanks for your help, geekman & OhEsEcks!

I've been doing a few insurance quotes on various makes/models and they all seem to come in around £500 - £750, which is less than what I paid last year for the Aygo.

Even found a very new and low mileage Skoda Superb, and that was one of the cheapest to insure.

I shall have to keep on looking for the right vehicle! :)

Thanks again!

8th gen Honda Civic would be an option. The boot is massive too. 1.8 petrol or 2.2D, although I think the 1.8 isn't much worse on fuel than the diesel based on the experience of my 2.2D

Ford Mondeo or Skoda Superb every time based on what you have described. Seriously consider whether you need an estate though, both cars have massive boots in hatchback form.

I would also look out for a high spec one (Titanium X Mondeo or Elegance Superb), as low spec versions of this sort of car can often be pool/hire/fleet cars, where as you stand more chance of it being a management car when it's top spec.

Chaps,

I'd like to thank you all for your advice, once again.

I have, today, collected a 2012 (62 plate), Skoda Rapid 1.2 TSI Petrol. I managed to strike up a very good deal with the dealer, costing me less than £10k (including a good P/X value on the Aygo).

Sub 10k on the clock, cruise control, sat nav, bluetooth pack, nice non-standard Alloy wheels and the balance of the warranty; circa 18 months.

I had one of those as a hire car last year, not a bad car for what it is and was reasonably economical on the journey from London to Leeds that I hired it for. If cost to change came out at less than £6k then you didn't do too badly.
