Thomas Hitzlsperger announces he is gay

It's a shame that we're still in a world where we still need high profile role models to actually come out publicly. But alas homophobia is still rife in humanity.

Never heard of him, but I don't see why this is a big deal or newsworthy?

Thomas Hitzlsperger has become the most high-profile footballer to come out, announcing on Wednesday that he is gay.

The fact that you've not heard of him yet he's still the most high profile player says something about the culture in football.

It's Newsworthy because it's a high profile player who has come out in a very homophobic sport.

The only other player I can think of off the top of my head was Justin Fashnu who later committed suicide due to depression.

It's not like the campest man in the world Tom Daley coming out to cries of "Duh, like we didn't work that out"

That's why it's newsworthy.

Exactly. That's what I was writing. There was also the American footballer, Robbie Rogers, who came out a while ago.
It was also newsworthy when Gareth Thomas (Welsh Rugby player) admitted to being gay a few years ago.

It's shouldn't be but unfortunately very, very few footballers are openly gay. He's a player who had a long and successful career in the Premier League and for Germany. Hopefully, this will make current players feel more comfortable with being open about their sexuality.

I found it interesting that he said that his sexuality was never a problem in the dressing room. Was it the likely rejection of the fans who put him off announcing it earlier?

I imagine so, you can imagine the abuse he would have got from the crowd at away games.

Cracking player, Villa should have kept him.

So he's come out, not my business & don't see why he gets 'congratulated' on it.

Given the alleged stories we normally read about footballers I think the last thing we need is them to be more open about there sexuality ...

So what to this story

Are we clapping people that are announcing they are gay or something? I'm proud to be straight but you don't see me singing about it.

Let me know when footballers come out for faking injuries ;)
