Spec Me: Exec Saloon 10k

Hey Guys - my mr2's engine just packed up yesterday and replacing it isn't an option so it's time for an upgrade

So with a 10k budget I'm looking for a low mileage, 5 door, efficient executive saloon.
I'm pretty set on a 3 series however wanted your expertise as to what to look out for when buying these second hand 2007-2009 or whether I'm looking at the right brand/car and should be getting an audi/saab!!

If you'd have a Saab get a Saab, massively cheaper than any of the others you are looking at.

How many miles a year out of interest, a figure that'd make leasing something viable?

Some decent deals on A6s at the moment.

approximately 1100 miles a month - so could do with it being not too thirsty although my last car ended up drinking petrol and oil so shouldn't be too much of a shock.

Looks the business, and seriously (60mpg) economical, and cheap to maintain as its all diesel VAG running gear.

10k would get you a 60 or 61 plate GT model with adjustable suspension.

Only a manual one. Manual VW 4 cylinder diesels are horrible to drive, powerband is so narrow that you are CONSTANTLY changing gears.

Would never have a manual 4 cyclinder tdi ever again.

DSG's cost £2k more per model.

Since when can you get an A3 Saloon for £10k? They were released late 2013, £30oddk new with options...you're not going to get an A3 saloon for 10k.
