Picked up a chip on my way into work this morning, very annoying. I've had a quick read up and it looks like what I've got is repairable (it's under the size of a 10p piece, definite chip with a couple of superficial surface cracks, away from the edge, on the passenger side).

My question is, what do people recommend? Do I get one of the self repair kits to stop the crack propagating and save myself a load of money? Or is this a false economy and I should pay for a proper firm to do it and guarantee the work?

I've got a Mondeo with a heated windscreen, so I'm keen to avoid this spreading since a replacement would be pretty painful to the wallet!

Cheers.

It's free on most insurances, while chips can be repaired it will still be visible and there is also a chance that the screen can crack during the repair that means you need a new screen.

I have TPFT cover, no windscreen cover. Not fussed about visibility per se, I'd just rather not have it propagate into an issue.

Not had any quotes yet since it's the evening, but if that's all it costs to get someone to do it then I'll definitely do that, thanks :).

Had a crack in a similar place got my insurance to do it for "free" cost me £20 excess and auto glass came round and was done in 30mins.
First time I've heard of there being an excess on a repair.

Local independents usually so it for about £25 Autoglass, National etc are about £35 roughly.

More and more policies nowadays are charging a small excess for repairs, also the cost of replacement has gone up a lot in the last 5 years, normally it seemed to be 50quid but now its typically 75+

Must just be the insurance companies that have contracts with who I work for but I'm yet to see an excess for a repair.

I got my windscreen replaced today and paid a £75 excess. A repair would have been a £10 excess I think. I'm with aviva.

In response to the OP, I'd just get a local company to repair it for ease of mind.
