I used US car hire when booking in the states...Worked like a dream.

What would be the best option for booking in spain?

Cheers

I used Centauro when I went to Malaga, but I wouldn't again. Like a lot of Spanish car rental companies, they have a retarded "return empty" fuel policy.

It's a complete pain in the balls, and I would pay the extra to go with a known brand like Avis, Hertz, Alamo etc.

Although not Thrifty. They charged my credit card for 15 litres of fuel when I returned a car completely full in South Africa in November 2013. And now that I've got that off my ****, someone else can chime in :)

I used in Centuaro when arriving at Alicante. Car we got was small, but nice and new. Agree that the "return empty" policy can be a bit of a pain, but otherwise, no problem.

Yeah, I got a new car too. A 1.6TDi Golf MKVI which is far better than anything I've ever received in South Africa.

Their service was fine and the price was good, but the "return empty" policy is pretty damn inconvenient, and it must make them a fortune.

Renting a car in Spain is a potential hornets nest. Many of the more local firms seem set up to extract hilarious sums of money out of hapless tourists, even when you think you have prepaid for everything up front.

Protect yourself and rent from a major rental firm, I would avoid Brokers who don't tell you who the rental is with.

The headline price with Avis etc will be more but it will probably work out cheaper and nicer.

Avis when I go to Murcia, afaik you still return the car full with them but make sure it's full to start with, nearly been caught out a few times with cars picked up 3/4 full etc.

I always collect and return from the airport (San Javier) plain sailing tbh.

I went with Hertz when we went to Sardinia in October, did it through Top Cashback and got £18 back - every little helps.
Oh and use these guys to cover your excess in case of any prangs - http://insurance4carhire.com

This.

That insurance company is great. Even an annual policy tends to be cheaper then what Hertz want to charge when you get to the desk.

I've successfully made a claim with this company when my hire car got keyed. They paid out very quickly straight to my bank.

With Hertz signup to the Gold club. Pre-register all the details and you can skip the queues. Car hire desks in Spain can be painfully slow without.

We rented a 9 seater with a avis with no problems. I took pictures with my phone to start looking returned it and the guy just filled it up in front of me and charged the same ppl as the garage round the corner. No problem no hassle they picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel.
