Gigabyte z87x-oc 2x8gb or 4x4gb?

Hello,

I'm currently trying to put together a spec for a new build. I'm thinking of the Gigabyte z87x-oc with a 4770k and putting 16gb ram in it.

Would I be better with 4 x 4gb sticks or 2 x 8gb sticks? Would one hold back the overclocking potential more than the other?

I'm also trying to decide between Teamgroup or Avexir ram. It's been a while since I've built a system and I'm unfamiliar with both makes. Is one considered better than the other at the moment with the GB motherboard in mind?

4x4 may put more strain on the memory controller and may limit a high overclock but if you are aiming for a reasonable oc then it shouldn't matter, its never bothered any of my builds.

Also I'd prefer Avexir as they generally have better timings but slightly more expensive so your call :)
 
2x8 for sure. IF you wanted to upgrade in the future it would be simple to buy another 2x8. Whereas if you went for the other option you would have to sell all 4x4 and purchase 4x8 :)

I noticed that some of the ram requires a higher voltage than others i.e. 1.5v or 1.5-1.65v. I'm new to Haswell overclocking...is a lower ram voltage going to make any overclock easier? Is it just better to concentrate on timings here or will the voltages make a difference with it being regulated from the cpu now?

Forgive the questions...it's unfortunately been a while since I've done any tinkering.

Haswell has increased tolerances of higher voltages and id go sar far to say it prefers it. That said either voltages are completely fine and you can o/c from both.
 
I have Avexir gold 2133 2x4 gb, its works great with my 4770k.
And yeah, why do you need 16gb?
Are you using your rig for video/photo editing?
Otherwise there is no benefit.

Yeah. I'll be using the rig for photo editing, video editing, music production and gaming so it needs to cover as many bases as possible unfortunately....though the temptation still exists to go for quicker ram and a better clock. :D

Currently running my ram in sig at 2600mhz, 1.75v. Will be trying lower but i assume this is ok?
