So I went mountain biking a few weeks back and trashed my lovely Nike trainers. They're caked in mud and smell like they've just been dug up from a time capsule.

I don't particularly want to put them in the washing machine as I'm scared they'll disintegrate. Any suggestions on what air freshner or product to use to make them smell normal again?

Rinse them in vinegar and then dry them with baking soda, should be good as new after.

Don't tell anyone though, it's a trade secret.

I've been putting trainers through the washing machine for years with no issues.

It's ruined a few pairs of my cousin's Brooks so we won't be doing that again! Maybe it's the 30*C setting... if it's just a rinse then maybe it's OK.

If it's just the smell you worry about stick them in freezer overnight. Kills all the bugs and no smell anymore. That of course doesn't clean the mud off. Top tip though and worked with my stinky sandals when I came back from Italy recently.
