OCUK forum speed/responsiveness

Gotta ask ourselves if the business case for a forum upgrade, in terms of both software and hardware, washes its face for OcUK.

Software upgrade is presumably fairly cheap, but would it solve the problem? Hardware upgrade - not cheap but would presumably sort out the connection issues. However if it mainly occurs off peak and therefore affects a minimal number of users that would still find the shop anyway, maybe they just don't want to bother.

Or maybe the owners haven't given budget for it, maybe they just don't want to, maybe they'd have to pay someone else to do it properly and don't want to, maybe they're scared of change, maybe they don't want to affect the forum's brand, maybe they're locked into a contract with the service provider? God knows! Just rambling!

yes its been bad past month or so.. at first I thought it was my new infinity connection but its only ocuk forums that time out and do odd things... usually in the evenings.

Hardware isn't the be all and end all.

I recently put together some code for a massive xenforo board (bigger than ocuk) to help reduce the hardware loads.

The 2 black lines show where I enabled, and then disabled the code, as you can see, it dropped a 5 load off the server in the space of 5 minutes.

We are now running a longer-term test and it looks as if the results are very promising.

I get the feeling that it's software too, the forum isn't the fastest and always prangs after midnight, but what takes an absolute age for me is editing a post.
It's not unusual to wait over a minute for a post to be uploaded, which is really annoying in an ongoing discussion, something about the edit process is borked.

It would also be nice to get a notification if anything gets quoted, and to extend the time before your post gets mangled with a pointless 'last edited by' postscript. Why do they do this anyway? It's so stupid.

Archiving popular threads? Not the best solution is it really? Vs upgrading server or forum software? Strips the heart out of the forum by archiving these threads in my opinion. Short fix...

Why exactly does it "strip the heart out of the forum"?

They can still be read.
There is a new thread that starts off where the old one left off (with a link to the old one), so the discussion can continue.
It's not like we're deleting the old threads.
All that is happening is that the URL for the current version of the thread has changed slightly, something that already happened with some long, ongoing threads, it's just that we're doing it for a few more of them now (rather than pretty much at random).

If it reduces the frequency of errors and makes the boards more responsive, what's the problem? Even if it's just for 6 months or a year or whatever, at least it'll provide a better experience while OcUK can perhaps mull over any upgrades if they so desire.

The amount of times I checked the forum last night (tried to) without even thinking that it may still be down is unreal! Some sort of habit too! I had database errors and it was awfully slow! She's flying today though :)
