Came back from eating my dinner to find my desktop frozen. Restarted the pc and this is all that happens:

Sorry for bad quality but had to use my phone.

I changed the PCI Express lane but that made no difference, tried updating the drivers but that didn't work.

Does anyone know if this looks like the death of my card or have any other suggestions?

cheers, K

Can you resize the pic please or place in spoiler tags :) - sorted :)

I assume temps are ok also have tried a re-install of the GPU drivers, but it does seem like the GPU has thrown a wobbler.

Sorry for image size :P Yeh, after the first time it happened I used my onboard gfx to download the latest drivers and install them but same result.

One thing I don't understand...whilst using the 7970 it displays the windows 7 loading screen perfectly fine, why would it be crashing on the desktop and not before?

I didn't check the temps before hand. I haven't had any kind of issues/warning signs leading up to this though. The card is still installed but there are no monitors attached at the moment, the card doesn't show up in HWmonitor so I can't check temps.

Cheers, K

********.

Only a mild OC within GPUTweak's range. In fact I don't even think it was applied at the time.

The folks I bought it from said it is out of warranty with their supplier so I'm assuming I missed that boat.

I was going to RMA it with Asus directly but do not have the box anymore (I know, hit me) and the serial number is on the box.

Looks like I'll have to get a new gfx card :'( Any quick suggestions of a modern card that is the same performance? I'm kinda out of touch with the modern batch.

P.S. Does anyone know why the boot screen works fine but not the desktop, could it be that the 3d graphics kick in on the desktop and it's failing?

Cheers, K

@ BSDave

OK great, I went to Asus European RMA service and entered what looks the serial from the card and got this automated response:

"Sorry we are unable to log this product via this form. Please contact your place of purchase for warranty details."

Guess I'm out of luck then as I have emailed the place where I purchased and they said it is out of warranty with their supplier. Bit annoying because I thought it had a 3 year warranty.

Cheers, K

Did you buy it brand new from them? If so they are obliged to deal with the RMA for the whole of the three year term. Asus do not deal with end users.

Yeh, brand new. Can I find that statement backed up in writing anywhere online?

I only looked briefly last night for the products warranty lifespan but finding an answer on the asus site is harder than anticipated.

cheers, guys, I appreciate the help.

P.S. In the case that I do have to buy another card can anyone link me the forum topic that I saw somewhere here highlighting all the brands and their RMA services and Warranty periods etc. The post graded the brands based on their rep and ability to deal with RMAs etc. I do not want it to be this difficult again.

Pretty certain all Asus GPU's come with a 3 year manufacturers warranty. Since the card was released on 9/1/2012 then there is no way it can be outside of this warranty period.

I believe just about every component Asus makes come with a 3 year warranty. It sounds like the retailer is going to give you the run around but do not let them put you off. If you need to, contact the citizens advice bureau for advice (was so much easier before the crap government got rid of consumer direct).

This ^^^

Asus GPU warranty is 3 years, Asus can deal directly with you or your supplier, its much cheaper for the Supplier if You contact Asus, that means you will have to send the card to the Czech Republic (the Expense the retailer wants to avoid)

As i said, Asus will deal with UK based Retailers, so send it back to where you got it from and deal with them, don't let them fob you off.
If the card is found to be faulty its upto the retailer to claim the sipping costs back from Asus.

OK, thanks everyone for the advice. I have made these things clear with the supplier and they have told me that they will get in touch with Asus.

I believe Asus will honor the warranty, but like you say, the shipping costs will be pretty annoying if the supplier doesn't pull their finger out. Fingers crossed (no pun intended).

p.s. thanks for the forum link, really useful thread :)

Cheers, K
