A month off work and £2k to spend, where would you go?

Why do people gush over Australia so much?

Sand, kangaroos, koala, red rock, opera house, beaches, sheep.
Did I miss anything exciting out of that list of boring things to see?

It's about as pointless as Las Vegas or Dubai.

i would spend 2 week in Australia,, awesome :D

For 2 grand? How?

I just dont get some of these replies, have people given them any actual consideration or do they just spout off random places? In that case how about 2 weeks on the moon, that would be awesome!

For a start if you only go to Australia for 2 weeks about 4 days of that is lost to travelling there and back. Then the flights will, depending on when you go, take up half the budget giving you just over a grand to fund a 2 week tour of Australia, a country not exactly known for being ultra cheap and although its got better lately the dollar sterling rate is still poor for us Brits, making it seem even more expensive.

Far better to go somewhere the budget comfortably affords you so you can really enjoy it without eating beans out of a can every night or something. Hence really, I think Europe is probably the best bet on this sort of budget. It will get you the closest you will get to the 1 month desired timescale and the money not spent on long haul flights - you can get to Paris to start an Interrail for 59 quid return from St Pancras – can be used to do cool stuff.

Have you been?

Oh of course, you have to go everywhere before assuming there is nothing of interest there

That was a list of their major "attractions", so unless I've missed something it's as stated.
People are nice though, but they all live in Paddington.

Well not always but it helps, it was a genuine question because your list of reasons why it's basically crap exactly matched mine before I went. I didn't actually want to go, I felt obliged as my GF had gone travelling and wanted me to meet her there.

When I got there, it completely changed my mind. It is so much more than the list of generic stuff you reel off above. There is beautiful scenery, interesting cities, fabulous coastlines, really great mountains, beautiful islands (Fraser Island, an entire island made of sand and accessible only to 4wd vehicles has to be seen to be beleived) etc etc. It has almost everything you would want and I would really love to go back.

most people your age tend to jet off to Australia/Thailand for a few months. My cousin is actually doing that soon.

Scenery is better done by other places, ones that have a bit of culture and history.
Like all of Asia, all of America, all of South America, All of Africa, most of Europe.
And actually I'm not that interested in sand.

Australia really comes bottom of my bucket list along with Skegness, and I've been to Skegness.

I'm really not sure how you can state that with such confidence. All of those areas have great scenery, but its not neccesarily better just different. Of your list I've done quite a bit of Europe and quite a lot of North America, the scenery was at times staggering. But then so was Australia? If it's as crap as you say it is and everywhere else is so much better am I simply dim for not noticing

Dont forget though that the price of the flights to many of these places will take up at least 25-40% of his budget.

I'm not forgetting. :)

A couple of them would be very tight for £2k, another couple you could easily do for way less than £2k.

Just to reinforce Australia costs. I'm going for 2 weeks (all I can afford to take off work) to see family and catch the F1 race. I decided to not get the cheapest flights as it is a long trip so I booked with Emerites as it was the cheapest "good" airline (they have a partnership with use Qantas so I'm basically flying Qantas) and it came to ~£840. A 4 day pass for the race was about £230. So even with 0 accomadation costs and heavily reduced food costs I'm still over a grand down before setting foot in the country and I've still got to get insurance, set up my mobile and get a good credit card for travel so that's even more cost.

Yes scenery is just scenery, although I'd put Africa over most places because it just feels epic. However there is almost nothing to see in Africa but scenery, no culture, no history, although you do have interesting animals which Aus doesn't.
Italy, entirely different.

Central and South America.

I was just about to post this... Somewhere like Costa Rica (stunning), Guatamala or Belize (or all of the above). £600-700 for flights and then £1300 for spending and travelling around. All pretty safe and easy to travel round as an English speaker with plenty of tourist infrastructure and things to do (and stunning wildlife).

Edit : OP, look into WWOOFing and couch surfing/air b&b, although with only a month to spare and a reasonable budget you shouldn't really need to think about WWOOFing.

Maybe read a few of their authors?
America has had more influence on our culture than anywhere else.

Most of what we have achieved has been in the last 150 years, it is the same for America.
Just because we have a few castles doesn't make them culturally poorer than us.

Yeah, like the whole of the west, north and south coast... I'll get back to you in a few months on the west coast... I'm hoping deserted country with stunning scenery (and whale sharks).

Exactly, scenery and a big fish,
...you could be at Whitby and have the worlds best chips as well.

Australia does not warrant £2000, almost anywhere else is more interesting.

I wouldn't say you go to America to have a cultural experience. There's far better places for that. You go there for other things but not culture imo.

Not satisfying enough for that. :p

:D
