Travel to US - customs question?

I'm going to stay with a friend in the US for a couple of months.
I want to take a motherboard and graphic card with me to fit into his backup computer while I'm there. Will there be any issue having those in my carryon luggage?

I know there are import duties sometimes for things, and that's the kind of thing I'm wondering about.

I did similar about 10 years ago and funnily enough got pulled by customs. They in turn discovered the GPU, which was inside an anti-static bag wrapped in bubble wrap between clothes.

An eyebrow was raised but then lowered after I confirmed what it was and on I went.

Cheers, Paul.

 Those pesky X-Rays *shakes fist*

Just don't strap them to your chest and I reckon you'll be fine.

dont forget this:

Apart from the possibility of it being flagged by customs as suspicious, I can't imagine they'd try and charge you. Your mobile phone has a motherboard in and they don't charge for that (as far as I'm aware..)

Thanks for all the responses! No they wont be wired up to my chest or connected to a trigger :)
Yeah, it's the USA's strictness I worry about.

Selling ahead of time and buying new over there isn't really an option. I'd have to do it again when coming back two months later, and that wont work out at all well.

I intend to declare them. I was just concerned whether I'd be hit with a hefty import charge, since if you send something by post across borders, even if it's a gift, you can be charged a customs fee depending on the item's value.

Yes declare them as you go through (proves you have nothing to hide), then you could say you declared them as you didn't know if you had to or not. I've read about people bringing small systems through customers with no problem so you should have any.
