AMD Catalyst 14.1 Beta - Mantle Support *Coming Soon*

I think DirectX hasn't been ideal for a while now, but there wasn't much else, other than OpenGL. OpenGL probably suffers some of the same problems as DirectX, mostly that they're getting old and fat.

Yup, people are focusing a bit too much on where the bottleneck is and what Mantle is aimed at. Generally speaking DX isn't brilliant at extracting performance out of gpu's ignoring the CPU. It's using generally higher level concepts, isn't as optimised as it can be(by a fairly long way) for the hardware and currently doesn't send data to the GPU in the best optimised way possible(FAR from it).

Mantle itself will enable dev's to optimise code as it runs on the GPU, use the GPU's most up to date features in the way they deem gets the best performance out of it.

A side benefit is a huge reduction in cpu usage, this is not the intention of Mantle, just what happens when you take the API out of the picture API prevents by a long way the best performance on GPU and CPU.

Can the unused cpu be used in the game for partical effects for single gpu configurations? Or is it better to leave it to gpu? I remember from sifting through the amd apu 13 slides that johan presented, multi gpus can be used in new various ways such as: VR and low latency, 2 gpus, one gpu for each eye; also 2 gpus, 1 for rendering 1 for just partical effects and physx like use... so I got a beast R9 290X which needs some taming and I'm pretty sure that it can do render and phsyx simultaneously on its 2816 stream processors but if not then with mantle is it possible to use gpu for render and wahts left of cpu which will be higher for phsyx use?

Not quite so, if I recall correctly the 13.11 beta drivers arrived in October.

Doesn't matter. 13.11 didn't mean they were November drivers, it meant they were the betas of the eleventh driver released in 2013.

It's always been that way, but months and drivers coincided while AMD were doing a driver release every month. Now they are doing drivers as and when they see fit, so there will be months when there are no drivers and the point release increments in relationship to the number of releases as before.

An update on Mantle arriving END OF JANUARY

280 and 7970 are same but 290 is just a little different to those 2 cards, and I'm not talking about increased CU, but how they are repurposed into a new shadind frames. Read: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7457/the-radeon-r9-290x-review/2 and http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feature-primer-amds-radeon-r9-290-series/gcn-20-and-new-powertune
The most obvious one is 7000 and 280 have 2 asynchronous compute engines that can queue 2 each, so for a total of 4 compute in every CU, but 290 has 8 ACE that can queue 8 each for a total of 64 compute per CU. 7000 and 280 has 32 CU times 4 gives 128 compute command per cycle, but for 290 which has 44 CU times 64 gives 2816 compute command per cycle that is amazing if you ask me, and since mantle is heavy on compute shading, I would say 290 and 290X is way to go.

Would my 280x @ 1300mhz be a match for 780 when mantle comes out?

In Thief and BF4 it may well. In every other game currently released, I don't think Mantle will help.

So if we have to generalise the 2 current/upcoming games with Mantle against every other game in existence without Mantle, I'd say, as an overall summary, "no".
