Travel to work car.

Any hatch for £3k will be a sideways step. The only reason I could argue to change is for something a bit more fun.

How about a MK2.5 1.8i MX5? It'll be slighly older (a 02-55 plate) but it ticks the fun box and should return similar to better MPG.

He's gonna struggle to fit 2 children in the boot of an mx5 ;)

From the OP I got the impression that the new small car he's bought for the missus is for carrying the kids around. His new car will be used for him going to and from work.

Actually yeah, re-reading it you maybe right, but if not, rodenal's suggestion sounds like it could work. On a scale of 1-10 how weather resistant are your children OP?

I'll struggle to fit myself into an MX5, 6'2" and very over weight.
Yes wife has the kids and I'll follow with any that want to drive with dad, on any days out. That's if all 6 of us go, these days it just mainly my wife and I plus 2 of the kids.

I don't mind a side ways step to add a bit of fun to the drive. Just don't need a mobile brick any more.
