This talk of survivors not speaking of their experiences makes me wonder just how horrific things must have been. Not just for their own experiences, but in battles of yester-year. Before "human rights" were even a thing. Before the geneva convention, etc. Before the internet and the ease-of-access we have today of images from the battles and camps. Basically, when people could really get away with it.
I imagine many of the soldiers in the Crimean, Napoleonic, hell even The Battle of Hastings and Roman conflicts would wish for death instead of capture to the horrific torture and interrogations that would be inflicted upon them.
The tales from the slavery trade where by captains of vessels that would transport wares including slaves, when caught in misfortunate weather, to save weight would throw the slaves (still chained up) overboard before considering throwing other materials such as mead and cloth gives an insight into just how little regard for "them" people had.
Images from the US Civil War POW camps show conditions that would have made even the SS shudder.
