Tell me to man the hell up

I've been to the doctors twice about my tongue, first time round they gave me drops, second time round it was tablets. Still exactly the same issue, they expect oral thrush also, but heyo!

Hope you get it sorted! :)

Update. Today was the day. I've had the biopsy and just got home. :)
Female surgeon, very pleasant and efficient. Injection was fine, no more painful than a dentists injection, except in the tongue instead of gums. 20 seconds later, "We'll just test if it's numb, do you feel anything sharp?" Nope. Before I knew it, she'd taken the sample she needed. Then I saw her doing the stitches and it was over, probably less than 10 minutes. Asked her if it was anything serious or malignant and she said no, she thinks it's geographic tongue. I wont get the results for 6 weeks though. Just as well she gave me confidence it's nothing serious or I would have been a nervous wreck before 6 weeks.

The anaesthetic has worn off and my tongue is hurting like absolute **** now! It's pretty unbearable with only fleeting moments of relief. When I swallow it hurts as it sort of pull on the underneath of the tongue a bit. Taken a couple of paracetamol, I think they're kicking in a bit. That's all the surgeon recommended, she said it'll just feel like a sore ulcer in your mouth, but it feels much worse than that tbh, lol. I juust rang the maxillo clinic to tell them about the pain and the nurse said yes the tongue will hurt more than other ares but it will subside in 4 to 5 hours. Hmm, hope so! I've gone back to bed and might have to cancel my private teaching this evening if this pain doesn't go away.

I was given some swabs and instructions of do's and don'ts

Your tongue repairs itself very fast compared to the rest of your body (AFAIK). I would expect that 4-5 hours to be correct.

Hope everything goes well.

Thanks mate. Pain is somewhat reduced now, probably due to the paracetamol as well as the tongue repairing itself. Just had some tomato soup, luke warm and soaked bread in it. Soup was easy to drink, but the bread was a chore as anywhere it touches the tongue is instant discomfort.

Glad to hear that the prognosis is a good one and hope it all goes well for you. :)

Thanks Cosimo. You made me look up 'prognosis'. :) I always thought it was just another word for diagnosis, but it's not, it's the prediction of a likely outcome.

If you spit in a glass of water and see tentacles come down a few minutes later, I'd say you have more than thrush, more like a bad case of octopus or squid!

Either way... calamari for dinner yo!

We all worry about the big C, it is a terrible thing that affects all of us directly or indirectly in our lives. The good news is that more often than not the issues that Google tell us are Cancer Ebola Aids are in fact not, but people often think the worst. The other issue is that when you fear you have something serious it creates a whole load of fresh side effects that add to the problem.

Hope you get the good news, I doubt you'd have a surgeon making such a claim if there were not 95% confident it was nothing to worry about and if it is anything serious you'll know well before 6 weeks!

My wife has recently been through ANOTHER scare for the Big C. Luckily she has private health so the entire process of testing was done and completed in 3 days, even to the effect of getting her results as she came around.

That's so terrible, it's funny. :D

So glad your wife's results were (I'm assuming) benign! That's the beauty of going private, you can find these things out in no time at all.

You're right about the surgeon making such a claim, which bodes well for me. But me being a glass half empty kinda guy :p I worry about that other 5%. Like the doctor that told me he's 99% sure I had oral thrush. Turns out it's not oral thrush and we're into the other 1%. Still, yeah, my mind is pretty much at rest after what she said.

Thank you and yes the news was good. My wife has been through the mill over the last 7 years, which I won't go into but suffice to say when the GP says "well our tests show it's not an infection, so we need to dig deeper" you tend to put life on hold. Our private health insurance has paid for itself after the 1st operation, she has had 5. I hate the fact we have to have it, but the reality is it's gold standard service and that I am willing to pay for. She has had some incredibly innovative treatments and tests, including pill cameras that take 180,000 images of your digestive system in 24 hours, but the real boon is the speed of diagnosis.

GP writes a letter, next day we are in with the consultant we chose, thanks to friends who are consultants finding the best, they do it all there and then and she had a CT scan for example with an Oncologist in the room. This followed by cameras to give gold standard. 5 days after the GP of doom, she gets the all clear. I was going to say you can't buy that service, but sadly we had to.
