Just a word of warning about CEX

Exactly, a pretty horrible amount of money to **** up the wall for a retailer that isn't worth that much.

Windows 8 has a bad rep peoples people don't like change. In fact, a large proportion of people who see me with my Windows 8 laptop assume I'm using 7 because people don't fully appreciate how similar they are.

80% of what I do on my Windows 8 laptop looks and functions identical to the way it does on 7 except the laptop boots incredibly fast and there's no old school Start menu.

Don't fear the change my friends, embrace it :D

I've had to use Win8 a bit at work as we have one machine with it for the programmers and it's almost universally hated by all who have come into contact with it.

I just loath that apps page - if it had the option to use the old start menu instead I'd probably be fine with it.

The last time I went to CEX it was to trade in my PSP, I handed it over the counter, and the guy immediately opened the UMD door with such force that he snapped the hinge, then closed it again. (Unintentionally, I think/hope.)

He then had the cheek to say he couldn't take it because it had a broken UMD door.

Would love to know how this ended up?

MM all day. Don't think I've ever walked in to a CEX shop.

For small amounts of items, sure, but if you want to clear loads of items in one go then it is more convenient to send them all to them (they include postage).

Not been into a cex for years but back in the day the birmingham city center store at least used to be awesome the guys that worked in their at the time were proper gamers and sound as a pound.

The simple fact of the matter is that we all go into CEX for a good look at some used games, however the prices are poor for both trade-ins and purchases, plus the staff are usually pretty dopey, probably with a degree in computer game design.

Why the hell anybody uses CEX is beyond me.
Ebay is much better. Gumtree is OK (only bought from it, never sold).

I would use the MM every single time for a laptop because:
1) You get the genuine going rate for it
2) It is a to a good audience who are not as stupid as the general public
3) Even if it has faults, you can list them and you still get more than CEX.
4) No need to deal with the morons who work at CEX.

Someone I know is a manager at CEX. There are two stores where it is and this is the smaller one, about the size of a small kitchen. It cannot even do valuations and has one other employee.
Not quite as good as the 'store manager' job he bragged about!

That's the thing, you don't even need to use the apps page.

The only time I see it (briefly) is when (for example) I press the Windows key on my keyboard and type "con" to get to Control Panel etc.

Apart from that, there is no need to use it. Windows boots straight to desktop. If you want to run a program (or even an app) you can just click on the desktop shortcut (shock horror) or press the Windows key and type the first few letters of it. Windows key + E opens explorer.. so there really is no need for a start menu.

Regardless, I would happily have the widely hated apps page if it means having far superior boot up and shut down times :)

Also where is the MM (pornroom)?
Haven't been here long enough :(

I used to pop into CEX on occasion as i worked near one.

What really put me off was one time, i was looking for a sound card, the one i was looking at was around the 50 quid mark, they were seling an unboxed one for about 10 quid less than a brand new one.. needless to say i just bought a new one with a proper warranty from a retailer i know has an instant, fair returns policy.

As far as im concerned CEX is no different to cash coverters.. They prey on the desperate, buy well under market value, and then sell at crazy prices for what are essentially soiled goods.

I dread to think how much hassle you'd get if you tried to return a faulty graphics card or something.

Basically, yes. The spread between the prices they buy in at and the prices they sell on at is quite high. They're either highly profitable or highly inefficient.

I like CEX for one reason, trying to find old/rare PS2 games.

They google most of them now and sell the rare ones on ebay.

CEX are usually badly run franchises with staff turn over of crazy levels. They usually go bust if they open in nice areas due to not having enough chavs to flog them stolen goods.

Needed to exchange a faulty laptop ram module I'd bought from there (the laptop was going out to Cuba in 2 days). They exchanged it with no bother. I whipped out a screwdriver and tested the new module there and then.
