Care Hire in Italy

The most tedious habit in Italy (and many other European countries) is the practice of driving everywhere with two wheels hanging over the wrong side of the road. Especially on narrow winding roads.
 
We flew into Milan Linate airport last June and we drove up to Riva Del Garda at the top of Lake Garda. We used Maggiore booked via auto europe.

We hired a 308 estate as we had a pushchair to take but the car we got was a new DS5 estate which was great!

We took a 3rd party collision waiver insurance thingy mabob before we flew out so didn't get stung from the car hire company!
 
The Amex CDP (211762) seems cheaper at Hertz than the 33% global sale code, and it doesn't expire. At least for American bookings this seems to be the case.

Worth a go if you can pay by Amex Platinum.

When in Europe, avoid all companies which are not big names. You might accidently miss a bargain from a gem of a local firm but you are far more likely to dodge scams, 2 hour queues at airports, totally crap used cars, etc etc.

Rent with the big boys - at corporate locations, rather than licensees - and you'll pay more up front but it'll be a far better rental experience.

That only seems to reduce it from £111 to 101 for the basic economy class (Fiat Panda).

Do you mean book through the American Hertz website?
 
No I meant that ive only looked at American rentals :) You'd book through the UK site. If that's coming out more expensive then just ignore it, I just thought I would mention it as I had found it good for the rentals I was looking at through Hertz.
 
Ah I see, I noticed the 33% deal was pretty good, but it expires for booking at the end of June.

I've found these options:
1) £69.92 with Atlas Choice for Fiat 500 or similar, doesn't say which hire rental company tho.
2) £88.80 with ebookers.com for Hyundai i10 or similar, hire company is Budget
3) I think my brother has an Amex Platinum so I could get the Fiat Panda through Hertz for £101

What would be best?
 
I've used carhire3000 a few times and had no probs, including in Italy, they always seem cheapest for me.

Used atlas choice in the past, they're all just brokers. Never had a problem with them.

So it's probably best to go with the broker that list which rental firm it is? Rather than pot luck with the broker that doesn't say who the rental company is?
 
Yes, there is no way I would book a car without knowing who I was picking it up from beforehand. No way at all.

My only experience with Budget was terrible and I will never, ever use them again. Every single aspect of the rental was poor.
 
Which companies should I be using? Budget seems the cheapest "big brand" on carhire3000 for £88 then the next lowest is Hertz at £111...
 
Taxi ride I had in Italy when over there for business was pant wettingly scary, the taxi drivers are mental :/

Useful thread though, I'm looking at booking hire for summer holiday in France. Carhire3000 is throwing up a Megane or similar for £150 from Alamo for 7 days which seems pretty reasonable. Any good/bad experiences of Alamo, not one I've used before!
 
Ended up booking with Hertz, found a 15% discount code, and the price had just came down from £111 to £95 as well. So paid £81 in total for Panda or equivalent, I kinda wanted the little 500, but I'm not too fussed, it's only for 3 days.

Thanks for your help guys, hopefully I have a smooth experience and don't regret not going for the cheaper sister company of FireFly :p

Alamo is Europcar in France. We paid around £150 (with a bit of cashback off that) for an Alamo rental via Expedia for a week in France (flying in/out of Avignon) last September. Was listed as a "compact" which got us a Pug 308 which had sat-nav built-in. Just make sure you brim in if returning full - on a previous rental I think Europcar managed to get a litre in the tank and charged handsomely for it.
