Keep the stamps, tell them they weren't delivered.
I don't understand how things get lost. Where do they go?
It's not like there is a bottomless pit at the sorting office.
RM seem to be having a right faff about recently, whats with asking if things contain batterries now too?
So you have prrof of sending, a tracking number and no proof of delivery?
If they wrote a letter to Mr XXX whats to say thats been lost also?
When you check the tracking info does it simply say it's not been delivered?
.

Royal Mail need to do 2 things, 1. Raise prices, 2. Hire enough staff to keep up with the volume
Currently posties and mail center staff are so overworked it's no surprise they're losing mail.
They're trying to maintain their position as a cheap postal service but they just don't have the staff to maintain the quality, it's nonviable, they either need to be quality and people need to accept quality isn't cheap. Or they just go on trying to be cheap and in 20 years they're not longer going to exist.
would they deal with a loss there any better though?
So that after you hand over the money for them to post it they can redirect it to ebay, sell it and post back through Royal Mail. (I'm serious). They do the same for mountain bike suspension too as it is a 'compressed canister'. You can't claim on the insurance as you didn't comply with their terms and conditions and no you can not have the item back as it would be 'dangerous' to post through their system.
Avoid.
I sold something on ebay, sent it then buyer didn't want it anymore so requested a refund from RM, after a month they managed to give me a refund
For sending items I use collect+ usually, on the occasion RM if it's a small item
Try http://www.17track.net/index_en.shtml I use this now and it sometimes gives me more info.
