Its not small. Its huge

Its like the difference between watching porn verses actually doing it yourself.

I'm not up on the tech jargon for headphones. I do run a Linn hi-fi though.
They just sound great IMO.

But you probably can get cheaper senheisers that have fantastic sound depth, clarity, positional accuracy etc.

£205 for a headset? No thank you!

The top Seinhieser gaming headsets use USB2/3 with a built in digital decoder. No need for a sound card from my understanding.

Spot on. My Senheisser 333D G4me headphones sound awesome. I don't use them enough but I can hear footsteps in BF3/4 and where they are coming from when I do use them. USB connected with its own decoder.

Yeah I dont like Virtual surround. had a couple headphone's that are Stereo with Dolby and it dont sound that good.
My Sound card can also turn any headset into Dobly headphone, again it sounds not that good.

I went and bought a true 5.1 headset Roccat kave 5.1 and omg the sound difference is unreal.

Well for 65 quid those 5.1 headphones look like a real winner, Senheiser audio reproduction is world class so for movies as well as gaming they work for me.

Back on topic. Has Mantle been delayed because of the BF4 problems alone, or are AMD having separate issues getting it to run.

Mantle 'beta' has been with developers since September. Its up to EA/Dice to patch it into the game once the bugs have been fixed. There is supposed to be a 'big patch' due near the end of the month for BF4. Its looking likely that Mantle will be part of this big patch. I'm making one final prediction, as all of my others have been hopeless. 28th January folks, you heard it here first. (again :p)

Certainly the initial release with BF4 has been delayed because EA put a stop to almost everything in order to fix the bugs in BF4. Everything got caught in that net, so we're not likely to see Mantle in BF4 until all the major BF4 issues have been fixed.

It looks like the next big Mantle showcase will be Thief, and that's due at the end of February, and may arrive before BF4 gets itself sorted. There's been no indications of problems with that title, and it's also being used to showcase TrueAudio.

So we have the proprietary tech called "True Audio", which is cool, as AMD invented it but am I missing something? That demo sounds damned good (even if the fella gets on my nerves) and this is just using normal sound chips and headphones (I am using Sennheiser 333D G4me headphones). Why do we need True Audio when we can do it already? Wouldn't it be better to promote and use this already available and sounding great audio?

It needs the chip to process it or something.

That is cool but I don't have that chip and the demo of that Gen Audio sounds stunning.

This is how I understand it taking in to consideration AMDs open to all approach. GenAudio can be used by devs without True Audio hardware, what it will do is using the CPU instead. Due to the nature of the API and its heavy calculations for sound it may slow down overall game performance cause the CPU is getting hammered. It may as well be necessary to lower some of the details it deliver such as the amount of channels that it can play at once. This is where True Audio comes in. The chip can do all the heavy lifting instead of the CPU leaving more resources for everything else. Now the True Audio chip isnt locked down to the GenAudio(astoundSound) only but is freely available for any Audio API to use if they want to take advantage of that.

I think this is why we only see the true audio chip on the 290x and the cheap 260x. Buy the best card and get everything or buy the cheapest card as a plugin and still get the benefit while using whatever you had before to deal with the graphics.

Many think that True Audio will replace their current audio card or onboard. It wont. it will do its job with the positional audio calculations and send it down the pipes to your selected Audio out device, be it onboard sound, dedicated sound card or perhaps some USB headset.

Right then, I got the Gigabyte G1 Sniper z87 mobo, I'm told the audio is fairly decent, it have a 290, what do I need to get the most out of TruAudio? Is the on board sound going to cut it or do I need an add in sound card? If so any recommendation on which is good for a lowish budget? Also headset, I need a new one I guess, 5.1 at a minimum I guess? Ideas for a decent budget set?

Cheers all

is it the 290x or just the 290? cause the r9 290 does NOT have a True Audio chip.

Your onboard will most likely be fine until you start investing in Audiophile graded headphones, at which point you should be buying an external DAC that takes digital or coax out and use that with your headphones.

Surround can be done(and should be done when it comes to headphones) virtually. Dont bother with True surround sound headsets. The drivers are a lot smaller and the cost a lot higher and you wont get the sound you are paying for. This is the point with AstoundSound(which can use the True Audio chip) that it does such a good job emulating surround sound on stereo headphones. Also there are alternatives for games that dont have support for this, such as Razer surround application which is free. I have no idea how good or bad it may be but it is still free.
