I just bought a subwoofer cable. I have only just noticed though on my Yamaha v673 that were it says subwoofer on the back l, it has 2 phono ports listed subwoofer 1 and 2.... My cable is just a single cable, will it still work?

Can someone explain the point of two subs? Seeing as bass isn't directional.

different speaker/sub combinations have cross-over frequencies set differently.
some are 120hz, so you will hear a subs direction.

Some surround formats are designed for front/rear subs.

It's better to have 2 subs running low volume than one sub running full pelt.

Raymond is right, it's immensely difficult to position multiple sources of bass and not have destructive interference mean you feel nothing where you're sitting. I can see front and rear sub being a thing as long as they are delayed properly for whenever they are both going at once.

Two or more subs actually give a more even room response. 4 is optimal according to the Harmon paper. As stated LFE channel is up to 120Hz on BD and is easily pinpointed. Also the 80hz threshold isn't universal. There are some people who can perceive directionality lower than 80hz and so a second sub helps - hence why I run two Monoliths. It's also easy to set up with an Antimode and you gain extra headroom due to proximity coupling. The only time multiple subs gets really messy is if you have different models.

Bass is unidirectional anyway so how exactly are these front and rear sub works?

Not all subs are created equal and not all subs are unidirectional. Some subs work above 80hz so you can hear which direction it's vaguely coming from.

Also, since bluray has full range surround sound people tend to want their home cinemas to sound as intended. Big film score studios have matching full range speakers on each channel. A 7.2 system is a cut down version of it. Think of it as a 2.1 system for the rears.

Here's my speakers with their matching subs in RSI Studios in Switzerland in a surround system where each channel has its own subwoofer.

Another example - PMC typically do the same with their larger models, the MB2 pictured below at the screening room in Metropolis Studios, London, don't need a subwoofer since the mains handle the LFE.
