Out With The Old?.. In With The New?

Ahhh see how the cost has crept up from an initial budget of £1000, now your at nearly £1,600! This always happens to me when speccing up a PC build for myself!

You could save a bit of cash by going for an AMD 290 graphics card, which has very similar performance to the 780:

Also the motherboard is very high-end so if you wanted to save some cash you should be able to get a decent one for around £100, perhaps something like this:

Anyway, if you are happy with the costs then what you have specced looks very nice indeed! Pretty much everything in your basket is the highest spec possible lol

Hiya WalderX...Welcome aboard :)

Indeed the cost crept up....I kind of knew when i started this thread that it would ... My last experience taught me that i would end up spending a fair bit more so i started with a kind of base figure :)

All in all I'm happy with the price for the parts i picked ...It will be a decent rig with room to grow later :)

I'm sticking with the mobo....I'm willing to pay a bit more for what looks like a very strong bit of kit .... Reviews say it's bullet proof strong ...It has most of the bell's and whistles and again room to develop at a later date :)

I have to admit ...I'm still swinging between gpu's .... I seen the MSI Geforce GTX 780 Gaming Edition OC 3072MB at the same price as the GainwardGeForce GTX 780 Phantom GLH 3072MB but it's out of stock at the moment ...It fit's the color scheme ( even though the card is upside down in the case and the color can't actually be seen lol )... The big draw to the Gainward was again the stella reviews it got

So all said and done ...It's not really about saving a few bob here and there ...It's more about getting a pretty decent rig for a bit of future upgrading when needed .... GTX Ti's will come down in price sooner or later :P

Thanks for your input brother :)

Looking good. But I would get the MSI 780, comes with 3 year warrranty and fits in with the colour coding.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Geforce GTX 780 Gaming Edition OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £399.95
Total : £409.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Hi again Idleman ...Thanks for sticking with me on the journey :)

As i said to WalderX ...I seen this card .... Like the look ....same price ....Out of stock at the moment and the reviews for the Gainward just tipped it for me :)

I did however just see the MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB

a bit cheaper ...With the lack of experience needed here ...I can't see how a 4 meg would be cheaper than a 3 meg ...Any idea ?
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-133-GI&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

So far it's the Gainward ftw ... If i can be swayed or convinced otherwise im willing to change it around :)

Thanks for the help :)

Hi All :)

Just waiting on the mighty Fulax to cast his expert eyes over this spec and i will get it on order :)

I have a question though .... If i order today and the price drops on one of the products ... Can i call tomorrow and get it at that price ?

Looking forward to the weekend here :)

Assuming you mean this spec...

...it looks lovely. I'm a fan of those Gainward cards, so that has my approval. The MSI Gaming may be red and black, but only on the fan shroud, which you won't see anyway. The Gainward will probably overclock better, too.

As for the extra gigabyte of VRAM on the 290 - it's not something to worry about unless you're playing at silly resolutions (like, over 1440p). Nvidia cards always carry a bit of a premium, which is why the 780 is more expensive. Both are great cards - you can't go wrong with either, really.

I've heard of people ordering just after an item has come off Today Only/Week Only offer and have had the deal price honoured after calling OcUK. But I wouldn't count on getting a bit of money back if something you bought at normal price goes on offer. Luck of the draw, I suppose.

Have fun with your new toys :D

Thank you Fulax :)

You have been a massive help brother :)
I will place the order and I'm sure i will have plenty of fun :)

I will update this post when i start the build... Any pre-build advice is welcome :)

You would :p

To be fair, an LED strip and some SP120s would spruce it up a bit more.

LOL

It's no shock that you say this....I have been looking at The SP120s ....and a bit of LED bling .... I have already decided that i might want to upgrade the fans ( for a bit of shhhsh ) ....Gonna wait and see how it sounds ....Stock fans might be quiet enough for me....i dunno :)

Same with the LED's .... The red light from the other illuminated parts might be enough ....If not i will hit it with some LED fantasticness lol

Hi All :)

Hope your having a great weekend ...I wish i was ...LOL

Ok ...Just wanted to update you on events .... I decided to pull the trigger on the spec that was settled on .... All went good as far as ordering and delivery ... Very quick ... Boxed well... Unpacked all the stuff and set about the building phase ... All went together pretty easy ... The case is really good to work in ... No mess and all fitted nice and snug ....Then thing's got a bit more complicated

Switching on the mains power to the PSU--Check
Switching on the PSU the Mobo lights up--Check
Pushed power button on Case ---Plink ...The PSU tripped...and nothing ! ... Mobo lights stay illuminated ...But nothing

After a bit of head scratching ... Checked that all connections had been made...Re-seated the cpu ... Ram ...Vid card ... Checked them all for issues as i went ... All looked ok so i tried the power up again

Switching on the mains power to the PSU--Check
Switching on the PSU the Mobo lights up--Check
Pushed power button on Case ---Plink ...The PSU tripped...and nothing ! ... Mobo lights stay illuminated ...But nothing

Set about taking it all apart and unplugging the board ... Unpluged everything ...checking each part ...all looked good ...Refering to the manual i check and double check all the connections are in the right place and i step by step build it back ....Happy that it was all correct i set about the start up phase .... Plink !

Refering back to the manual ... I notice in one section on" ATX power connectors" that it says " Connect 24 pin ATX Cable A "... And connect 8 pin OR 4 pin into 8 pin connector " ... I did some reading on the net about these plugs and it seems they are only used for more power for a second Vid card .... SO i unplugged the 8pin and tried a restart phase .... And it fired up ... Ram LED's flashing like they should .... CPU cooler illuminated board illuminated ... Rear fan spinning ....Both fans on the cooler radiator spinning .... Case front fans not spinning

Hooked the case up to a screen .... No signal

And that's where i am at the moment .... Anyone want to ask any questions or offer some advice feel free to do so :)

Thanks for looking in :)

You should try the motherboard out of the case i.e. put it on top of the motherboard box, with minimal components, i.e. psu, just 1 stick of ram, 1hd, 1gfx card and monitor. Just to ensure the main parts are working and not tripping out on anything. You can usually use a screwdriver on the two pins that the case power button connects to, in order to start the motherboard up, otherwise rest it close to the case and connect the power button pin as usual.

What about reusing that case?

When you try to power on with the CPU 8-pin plugged in, what happens? Do fans and light come on briefly, then turn off? Or does nothing happen?

As Ryu said, try starting up with the bare minimum - CPU, stock cooler, and a stick of RAM (no GPU). Try the RAM in different slots, and do the same with the other stick.

Hiya ryu :)

Thanks for your time :)

I'm in the process of doing just that ...The back of the mobo is armored so for sure nothing is touching the case at the back.... I will strip it all down and try again :)

Oh the Joys of build your own PC's hahaha :)

I will post in a bit to let you know how i got on :)
Thanks again :)

Are you plugging your monitor into the GRAPHICS card and not the motherboard's ONBOARD VGA/DVI port?

Did you remember to use the spacers between the motherboard and case? So the mobo is not touching the bare case causing it to short.
