Hey guys! My rig has been dying&was trying my best to hold out for the kaveri benchmarks before i made a decision. After months of looking/reading at amd builds, i was hoping fm2+ might have been my choice, or an amd 6300 build. My build would be for gaming/general purpose (having things like skype/steam/google/poss game running etc.../no encoding though etc...) I was mainly benching this rig on games such as bf4, but also upcoming aswell. Rts etc...

I wanted to ask wisdom (still thinking tbh) which build to go for, it stated out with the 6300 build, then the 8320& i priced up a (non k) i5 build.
I would be using a single card solution (i cant upgrade just yet but hopefully in a few months-finances)

After shopping around the builds came out to:

amd 6300 build £441
amd 8320 build £467
intel 4570 build £460

Now, i was set on the 6300, but the 8320&the 4570 builds are within £20. Would the 4570 be comparable to an oc'ed 8320 or even a 6300? Having a locked i5 im not 100% sure on (as i really cant push this budget over for z87&4670k) But would an oc'ed 6300/8320 be a better choice (was thinking of mantle/extra cores- albeit slower single core) or the stock 4570.(oh max i would be playing would be 1080p)

Also is this intel board any good as i was heavily reading into amd 970/990 chipsets?

In the months to come i would add either a 270/x or 280/x (currently have to re-use a 5750 til then)

I was veering to the 6300&poss a 8320, but then priced up the intel, so what are you're thoughts guys? I wouldn't be upgrading for a fair while after this, just trying to think of the rig that would give a good amount of longevity as possible.

Thanks for reading& any replies! Reply might be slow as im using on screen keyboard...:( apologies! :p

(god i hope those basket links work!:p)

How about using a three month free trial of Windows 8.1? The £70 saved would get you a 4670k/Z87 build.

Considering the minimal price difference, I'd ignore the 6300 build.

Hey Fulax, yeah i would have considered that(&by god did i try:p) however, finances are a bit too tight to push for that(my loving gf lent me a bit as this pc died too early for me to save:() I think the 4670k build came in well over £500-£550, just too much for me at the moment, with having to get a gpu upgrade asap/bills etc... the 8320/4570 was really at my limit. I was veering towards the 8320 for oc'ing/mantle, but was suprised when i priced up a i5 build (although non-k)

Drop the disk drive (maybe install windows from a USB or nick another disk drive temporarily), cheaper RAM and maybe you can squeeze it in? (4670k + a cheap Z87 mobo)

The ram was coming in at around £59.99, so not really sure it could cover the extra cost of the cpu&z87 mobo, i was really trying. You know i could kick myself because one week i saw the 4670k@£155... I've been really hesitant on this build,&waiting pateintly for kaveri to release(&thank god my pc held out... so far) but alas kaveri didn't seem the way to go (esp at release prices)

I just done a quick google search and can do an i5 build for your budget.

Hey idleman, that's cool:) When i was looking/pricing (as much as i wanted it) the cpu was at around 170ish&the mobo (gigabyte one) was arooound £94/104. Each time i made the cost higher i thought about bills/living costs, the slow payment back of some of it& the future gpu. I've been really bad (as in hesitant :p constantly reading up, but also hoping kaveri might've been a good option. You guys are right though windows 8 is a drain, but im still on xp so desperately need to update. Thanks for the reply idleman though& you guys:D

I'm sure you can definitely do something with an i5 4670k, you will just probably have to be a bit patient and shop around a bit

-i5 4670k for ~ £150 (I got mine for £143, patience is a virtue :D)
-Z87-HD3 Gigabyte mobo for ~ £90, if not the cheapest MSI can be had for ~£75)
-RAM ~£60
-1TB Hard drive ~£40
-24x DVD Writer ~ £12
-PSU ~£55
-Cooler ~£20

Totalling £412, give or take £20. Leaves you with a good chunk to get Win 7/8 or whatever else you need

Hey Shivy! Wow, that was a nice deal on that i5! I was looking at that mobo, but wasn't 100% on oc capability(was knee deep in amd research:p) I will def try to see if i can hold out for deal like that (but! i have been using on screen keyboard since November!:p) Thanks again though guys for your replies.

what's the full spec of your current pc? can you not reuse the hard disk/s, dvd rw etc to save some money?

YOUR BASKET

use the 90 days windows 8.1 trial and your current dvd drive if you want/need one. I've gone for one of the top 3/4 cpu air coolers but you can save money by going for one of the cheaper ones(can then include the dvd drive if you want).

Well I think the HD3 is a decent overclocker, although having 4 phase power delivery thingies I saw someone (stulid I think) had gotten 4.4ghz out of a 4670k and a HD3. Gigabyte also have UK RMA which is pretty nice too.

Hey fowler! My current pc is an old 775 (was cheap then)I would try to use my old hdd, just its 9 years old(is 200gb) and chuggs (one of my worries) the dvd drive also that old has reading problems, so was inclined to grab a fresh one(was going to back up my music) It's been a while since i upgraded:( That is a nice looking cooler! The main reason i was avoiding the trial was mainly cost with owing/new gpu&being pretty brassic atm. Thanks though for the build suggestion... i'm checking it out&taking it all in!:)

Hey shivy! that's cool, i'm sure it oc's fine!:p I have just been paranoid from checking out/reading the am3+ 125w Fx cpu's :p Yeah gigabytes uk rma service is great (i would have considered their boards for am3+, but reading about thottling scared the heebiejeebies outta me!:p)

Post up your current PC spec, we can see what can be reused.

Oh god... the shame!:p:rolleyes:. My super budget build from 2008 was...
e2180, some S-series mobo, 2gb of ddr2 ram, 200gb hdd(9years old&scares me!)a half working dvd drive:p I added an ati 5750 in 2011 or so(that i would reuse for now-until a nice new shiny gpu) The psu is an antec 400w, but is over 6/7 years old, so really need to replace. I will now walk the hall of shame...:p

what case?

Well, currently i have a £30 jobby from 2005(it's bad:eek:) with no front because the side panels hanging off... However! A month or more ago i sa the arc midi v2 for £69, so i bought that for the features/upgrade-ability (i know i should've maybe spent less, but i would have prob gone minimum of £50& with being £20 over that for what i got...oh god im trying to justify it...:p to be fair though this is the first nice case i've ever had... It's sat downstairs atm, waiting for some shiny new parts (at least i've the case covered...oh god justifying it again:p)

Hey Idleman! Man that build with the 4670k does look tempting! Thanks for pricing that up! With the free cooler aswell! It is over the budget, but not far off it! If i were to see the i5 at £150ish i would snap that up without blinking. Can i ask with the oc, will 500w cover it?(i was constantly in dilemma with the 83xx power usage) I think im going to have to look long and hard at trying for a 4670k build. Thanks again though for your&everyones replies so far!
