What on earth is there to 'prefer' about it unless you are one of these people who think because you have credit you must immediatly use it up on rubbish you don't need and don't have the money for?

I just don't understand, its not some sort of evil thing, it's a card, don't use it to purchase things you dont have the money for and I honestly cannot see a single reason NOT to have one.

How on earth can you PREFER reducing your financial flexibility? How can you PREFER having to hand over a huge pile of cash at a car rental desk for example? It's just madness.

This. Credit Cards are a great way to pay for things. You have up to (normally) 56 days to pay for purchases with no interest...up to 12 months (or more!) if you have an opening of account promotion. Furthermore, with a lot of cards you can earn points and rewards which do add up rather significantly if you do all or most of your spending with a rewards card.

As long as you are sensible and know you have more than enough money to cover the purchases you are putting on to it, then there is no issue.

If you are worried about remembering to pay the bill or whatever and thats what puts you off just set a direct debit up for the full amount each month, bingo? You could even be even more extreme with it and manually pay it off whenever you've used it - nothing ever owed, job done.

I've had a Tesco clubcard credit card for 6 years, I am literally their worst customer. Always paid it off in full each month, they have never got a penny out of me in interest. I've earned hundreds (thousands ?) of pounds in clubcard points in that time, I spend £200 worth on Christmas pressies this last Christmas alone. Christmas hardly cost me a penny in "new" money.

You miss the point, most people don't need the credit or use them for the credit, they use them because they are the safest, most convenient, and most rewarding way to pay for things.

I use my debit card, & paypal etc for other things.

You can get 18 months 0% interest on a Tesco Credit card and also earn Club Card points, seems like a no brainer if you can manage your finances properly.
