Aspirations for children

Doesn't specifying a particular job title or area for occupation run the risk that you're a) going to be massively disappointed if they don't follow it up, b) have no idea at this point whether it's even vaguely suitable for their aptitudes, c) might end up pushing them in a direction that doesn't make them happy..

My motivations for this thread aren't clear at the moment but they will soon. Try and just run with it for the moment :)

I'm struggling to do that tbh.. It just seems so random to pick specific careers and an arbitrary number of them

I don't see an issue with encouraging people to pick a career given that they have an interest in a particular area - say you have a daughter who does seem drawn to a career in medicine/healthcare then you might well encourage her to get the grades and try to get into medical school above choosing a career as a nurse, paramedic, physio, other health care worker...

I don't think I could be specific across all potential careers in general... I could say that given a particular area I'd encourage say joining a profession, aiming a bit higher etc... I'd also encourage having fall back options if pursuing complete long shots... like wanting to become a professional actor, singer, dancer, athlete etc.. but picking 3 specific careers is just far two arbitrary for me.. I don't have a preference as far as that is concerned.

Yes it is arbitrary, but I'm interested in what those arbitrary answers happen to be.

They seem pretty clear to me, this thread reads to me that you attempting to gain evidence that parents of girls either encourage or don't encourage their daughters to aim for a particular job or type of job in order to support a particular theory.

I'd guess this probably either relates to parents subconsciously reinforcing the notion of a 'glass ceiling' via having limited aspirations for their daughter or discouraging girls from pursuing traditional 'male' roles.

Yes it is arbitrary, but I'm interested in what those arbitrary answers happen to be.

fair enough.. some arbitrary ones:

Keeper at London Zoo - specifically looking after either penguins or sloths

Pilot for Virgin Atlantic - (discounted holidays for family members)

Waterside tester - yup its a real job and it sounds pretty awesome, travel the world and test watersides...

1) Construction
2) Engineer
3) Accountant

Okay, I joke - they're all 'male dominated' - but I'd be happy with whatever they chose within reason. It's up to them - be that male or female - what they choose to do with their life. I'd be happy to support them to become what they aspire to be.

Does that sound too American? :p

1. Vetinary Surgeon
2. CEO
3. Charity Board member.

Why? Get degree in vet science, work as a vet surgeon, after 5 years open up own practice, do cases probono where people cannot afford care for their pets in some cases, and try and educate looking after animals elsewhere in the planet.

What do I win? ;)

For the purpose of this thread, as I don't have children and I would want them to pursue whatever they wanted to in life....

Out of those three choices in the OP.....

Civil Engineer.

I wouldn't wish her into the NHS in any way or form with how it all seems to be falling apart at the moment.

On the other side of the coin I would in no way wish her to get into the totally unrealistic lifestyle that is what you might call "hollywood" mentality of the acting business.
