Apologies if this is a bit of a no-brainer, but I'm still learning..

I've been advised that getting some dual channel 8GB ram will improve things in my system especially gaming, video/image processing & music production.. which are my main uses

Can people explain if this is actually true/how & recommend some worth considering.

Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (1366)
i7 920 (DO) @3.8Ghz
Corsair XMS3 (6GB)
GTX 670 Windforce 3x (2Gb)
XFX PRO750
Iiyama Prolite E2607WSD 26"

Thanks.

X58 chipset uses a triple-channel memory architecture. You'd be best with a triple channel kit that comes in multiples of 3 (6GB, 12GB etc.)

Yes you can run in Dual Channel Mode with 2x8GB and you should see improvement, if you do go ahead Check your mobo manual to see which slots the ram go into for Dual Channel Mode.

I inherited the rig & don't have any of the manuals etc
Is there any other way I can check & can you guys also recommend some worth considering?
Is the replacement/installation as simple as swapping them over? (the only thing I've ever replaced is the GPU)

Thanks.

Probably work out cheaper to just grab another 6GB and whack it in the empty slots bro. Ive seen 6GB sell for very little in the mm.

** Just noticed you dont have access to MM, but have a good look on the bay

3 Channel--
1. 3 Channel mode cannot be enabled if only one or two DDR3 memory modules are installed.
2. When enabling 3 Channel mode with three, four or six modules, it is recommended that memory of the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips be used. When enabling 3 Channel mode with three memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_3 and DDR3_5 sockets. When enabling 3 Channel mode with four memory modules, be sure to install them in the DDR3_1, DDR3_2, DDR3_3 and DDR3_5 sockets

While similar modules are recommended, it sounds like you should be able to keep 3-channel mode with 4 or maybe even 5 modules (By adding a single, or dual channel set of modules)

I run mismatched memory on my zenbook (1 channel is 2GB soldered, 1 is 8GB sodimm, and it appears to run dual channel)

That motherboard will not take 8 GB DIMMs. Max is 6x 4GB for 24 GB. Your easiest bet is to add another 3x 2GB DIMMs for a total of 12 GB. OCUK don't appear to sell triple-channel kits but they sell 2 GB singles for £20, or 4 GB singles for £32.

I have a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (1366) as my work PC, my recommendation would be sell the current 6GB of ram as a matched set.

And buy 3 single sticks of 4 GB at the speed you require for 12 GB. This is likely to be more stable than 6 sticks of 2 GB of mixed ram.

I went from 3 x 2GB, to 2 x 8GB and didn't notice any difference of speed - dual channel to triple channel.

However, I did notice the difference the extra 2GB made.
