So I we have a pull switch in our bathroom that is a pain in the ass. The door opens to the right with the pull switch on the same side so we have to open the door and then reach around to turn on the light. So we want to get the switch converted to a normal wall switch.

As you can see in the pic the pull switch is on the left and we would like it brought down to the right just between the 2 shelves that are visible. I would imagine it would be easier and cheaper to have the wiring on the wall and have it covered by some plastic conduit. Or if it isnt too expensive it would obviously look better having the wiring running inside the wall. The walls are no more the 5" thick

Thanks

Why cant an electrician get in a loft and just move the cable over and drill a hole and have it through the ceiling on the right hand side? and just have a pull again  Wouldnt that be easier?

Is it a stud wall or brick?

I'm not an electrician but I don't think you're allowed to have a standard lightswitch in the bathroom. You are allowed to have it outside the room in the hall. Another option would be to move the pull switch to the other side with the shelves.

Also I'm pretty sure that any electrical work in a bathroom has to be done by a qualified electrician now?

Not sure on the last part, but believe you're right on the usual switch :)

e; Also, if you do have an electrician come and do it, he'll have to wire in a switch to disable an extractor fan if you have one before he signs it off.

You can have a normal switch but it has to be a certain distance away from shower/bath I think 3meters so unlikely possible looking at pic. Just move pull switch over mate. Probably enough cable to do it yourself legally.

I am a sparky for reference :D

You cant move the hinges over :p to do it properly anyway. That would be a right bodge :D Easiest way is to just get an electrician to move pull over to the other side. Much less hassle.

I have already moved the door. It did open up to the left but the wash basin is there and it didnt leave much room. Think I may just move the pull switch to the other side to save the ball ache. Thanks lads

Bathroom switches in SA are outside the door on the same switch as the landing light. Usually there is a double switch there and you just turn the bathroom light on from outside.

I have a similar string to turn on my bathroom light and i find it primitive an annoying, more annoying is i have a loud extractor fan that vents air in the loft that is linked to the light string and has a 1 min delay before it goes off.

All i have to do is run a wire from the light to the landing switch and replace the switch with a double switch, no need to drill anymore holes that way.

Current regulations (17th) require any switches to be outsize of zone 2. Zone 0 is a bath or basin, zone 1 is underneath the bath, area above the bath to ceiling and above and below the basin also. Zone 2 extends 0.6m horizontally from the edge of zone 1. So unless your bathroom is of a reasonable size i can't see this being applicable to you.

All of the above goes out the window if your bathroom is a wetroom setup as its then classed as a special location and theres a whole set of regulations different for that.

tl;dr Your allowed a switch but to be safe its got to be at the very least 0.6m away from the nearest zone 0/1 area (Sources of water)
