I am currently looking into the possibility of setting up a wedding photography business, and I dont think my current PC will be up to the task in the long term. I am currently running an Athlon 64X2 6000+ with a Radeon 4850 and 4GB RAM with a 750gb HDD. I am guessing I will need a beefier system with plenty of RAM and a sizeable hard drive, but any advice would be appreciated. Basically, is a decent PC for photoshop etc the same as a decent gaming PC?

Hi,

Well gaming systems and photoshop system can be the same, if using them for both uses but if its just a photoshop rig, you can save a lot of money.

Is it just going to be wedding photos you do? Any videoes?

I have a spec in mind, i just want to know if you'll be doing video's too. :)

Also, if it's going to be your business consider spending some extra money on back up options like a nas or mini server.

I couldn't wait :P went ahead and specced something that will do the job VERY well... I took on board dommed's comments and put in two WD Red drives for the nice long warranty and reliability...

I also figured that for photo/video editing the i7 would probs be the best CPU, cooled with a single fan water cooler... plenty of ram with nice speed/timings... and a pretty decent bang for buck GPU :)

As usual I am sure everyone will comment on my build and come up with something not only better but cheaper... this is my interpretation :)

Thanks! There wouldn't be any video work, just stills editing and storage. Budget will probably be around £800 - £1000 inc monitor if possible, although I have a windows 7 license on my current PC I could use. I will probably use my current setup to start with and then hopefully as things progress and I get a few more bookings, then drop the cash on the rig.

Also I would be using the system for gaming (rude not to really!) So that system looks like a winner for work and play! If I could just take the cost down about £200 it would be ideal...

Are you a photographer at the moment? Tough business to break into, though on the flip side if it doesn't work out you'll still have a gaming PC :-)

You'll need more than 4tb of storage on the long run, and I wouldn't want that in the same PC so I would go for a NAS with some Reduancy set up,.

Strictly ameuter at the moment! Yeah I know its pretty tough but I have the benefit of living on stoke (never heard that before!!) because Manchester, Cheshire, derby, Nottingham and Birmingham are all pretty much in my catchment area. Also setup costs are pretty low. If I decide to go ahead I would just need a couple of extra accessories for my camera, a website and some sample shots. After hopefully doing a couple of cheap gigs I can build reputation, charge a bit more and hopefully I!prove my camera, PC etc and take it from there whilst working in my day job. That's the plan anyway, and as you say I will still have a decent gaming PC worst case scenario!

I don't think its quite that easy.

If it were, everyone would be doing it..
