Have I toasted my CPU? :(

Hello all,

I have been very happily assembling my new build, i7 4770 on a Gigabyte Sniper motherboard and just when I wanted to tidy up a bit the case (remove old DVDs and stuff) I have somehow managed to get the main cable from the PSU to block the CPU fan. I noticed it after a few minutes as the PC did not post. I did not hear the starting sound either but did not pay attention.

I amended the situation, restarted the PC but after several attempts no joy. The Debug LED goes up to 99 and then settles at 72 or something.

I have the feeling that a new CPU might be on its way.

What do you guys think? I cannot believe that I have done something so stupid that it could go to the Guinness Book of records.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Cheers,
Jordan

EDIT: Would a reset help? Or should I clear the CMOS? Or Both?

Phew!!!!!!

After 20 agonising minutes envisaging a loss of another couple of hundred quid it POSTED!

I guess I must have cleared the CMOS, some thermal defence mechanism had prevented it from starting.

I would still like to hear what usually happens inn such situations, not that I am planning a repeat :).

Cheers,
Jordan

Pleased to hear you got it working mate, never nice to hear forum members having components die on them, just glad you brought yours back from the dead :D

Lucky for you the thermal cut-out was enabled in bios, I always check this is on & also check cpu fan settings.
