BMW 1 series service interval - potential argument with main dealer!

yeah having been bitten by cheaping out on the servicing on a focus ST which eventually went pop I'm pretty hot on this sort of thing lol.

So can someone explain the oil servicing levels then of a CBS BMW? I just thought it was the same type of servicing every time it came round?

My understanding is that the car has several types of service it wants, oil, air con, brakes, brake fluid, coolant etc.

They all operate within certain timescales and I think the oil one has some wiggle room in it depending on how the car is driven (hence why I get longer as all I do is trundle up and down motorways, I've done almost 20k in this car this year).

Obviously all these end up happening at different times, so my brake service may well not coincide with my oil service but when it goes in for the brakes they do just that, not the oil.

Then with the oil, every 3rd service they do a few extra filters but again I think every time they do an oil service they chuck out the old oil and filter and change it, it's just every 3rd one they find a reason to change some other filters and charge you another £200 on top of the normal fee.

Happy to be proven wrong but thats broadly what I think happens, hence why some people are saying they don't change the oil every service, that'll be because not every service has anything to do with the engine at all.

What I can say is the service countdown thing does not run at 1 mile down for every mile I drive, I'd guess I get something like 1.5, so when I was getting close to being ready for the service it was saying I had 1000 miles left for ages, some of that will be the fact it doesn't count down in single digits but I'm pretty sure I'd have done something like 500 miles before it even budged off 1000.

Right, ok.

Well my MOT is coming up soon and a month after that the brake indicator is due, so I might end up getting that at the same time I do the MOT.

If I see an irate Matt in the shed whilst waiting for that to be done, I shall wave. :D

The different service items are Oil(oil and filter), Front brakes, Rear brakes, Brake fluid, Chassis service and there used to be a pollen filter but thats now tied in with the oil service. The car will also show you when your MOT is due(you set this yourself). The different services are dependant on different criteria i.e. oil service is on mileage or max two years, brake fluid is three years now and brakes are as they wear out, the chassis is on mileage I belive too. On top of that every third oil service also includes fuel filters, air filter and spark plugs on a petrol.

Don't bother getting BMW to do the MOT they charge top dollar and when I used Synter Sunningdale they just run it to the local garage so you dont even get a BMW stamp on the MOT cert.

lol, to be fair to them they managed to do what BMW do and why I keep knowingly paying a bit too much for my cars, straight up acknowledged the issue, apologised and put it right.

I'll be there on Tuesday drinking their coffee waiting for them to be done.

I do have a bit of a bromance going on with BMW and their service, so much so the mrs now has a 1 series coupe and all I'm really considering as my next car is another beemer.

How is oil, changed at 36k, original?

he meant I thought I'd done another 40k on top of the last stamp which was about 36k.

Its fine, they changed it when they serviced it ready for sale, reset the service indicators on the key but just did a poor job of recording it on their system and didn't stamp the book.

No biggy in the end all sorted now but you know... the internet and all that.
