New card for 120hz?

I've just upgraded my monitor to a BenQ XL2411T but my 7950 is struggling at 120hz with games like BF4 etc. I do like to run games at higher detail levels and was looking into xfire but these 7950s have shot up in price lately and frankly I don't really want to buy a more powerful PSU either (currently have a Corsair TX650v1). So, I'm looking for a new card... I have a budget of between £400-£600 but ideally want to stay at the lower end of that. I really like the look of the 290s, especially with Mantle around the corner but a work colleague bought a VTX3D 290 that has severe black screen/freezing issues despite it being RMA'd twice and subsequently declared working by the seller. So, any suggestions are welcome. Many thanks.

Wait for MSI 290x Lightning and hope it won't be much more than £500 may be? There's should be no black screen issue once a custom PCB and Samsung rams are used. Or just go for one of the GTX780.

But for pushing 120Hz/120fps, CPU is also a very important factor as well, as not only graphic card is needed to be capable at holding as close to 120fps as possible, but the CPU as well. What CPU you currently using?

What would be the minimum spec to drive a 120Hz monitor? Thinking of buying the same monitor as the op, using a 7970 and i5 2500k@ 4.5GHz.

Cpu doesnt really become an issue untill you start thinking of xfire/sli
Yea but for people who uses 120Hz monitor such as myself, there may be times which I would rather have higher frame rate by taking down the graphic details down a notch instead of eye candy that I won't really noticed when engaged in the game, which CPU "could" become a bottleneck. But with OP's overclocked i7, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

i have 120hz in my sig below and have just upgraded from a 7950 to a msi 290 oc non reference and its amazing! if you do go for a 290 i would recommend you get that one, only problem is if you overclock you will have to do the afterburner fix which locks the memory and core at the same speeds all of the time, in game or out of game! bit of a pain really but will hopefully be fixed soon in amd drivers/newer afterburner beta.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £367.99
Total : £377.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

One 780ti will give you 120fps but not at ultra settings mind, going to have to turn the details down a fair bit.

If you want max settings + 120FPS then SLI/CrossFire is a must in my opinion for demanding games, sure a 290X/780/780Ti will reach high frame rates but the avg/min should be considered more. CF 290 is a great option for the price :)

Failing that, time to turn some settings down when needed which is by far a better trade off vs less frames on 120Hz.
