Case needs to be aesthetically pleasing to a 60 year old woman!! ;) NOT a big ugly box!!!
something quiet regards cooler
Maybe a slower SSD??? rather than mech
wifi on mobo may be an advantage.

OS win 8

Budget is flexible/ish

Can get it down to around the stated budget with a 250GB HDD instead of SSD. Even more if a Pentium would do instead of an i3.

The latest Intel stock cooler is very quiet. It's only problem really (for gamers or those who really stress their rigs) is that it doesn't cool enough. That won't be a problem for your mum I don't think.

The 120mm fans on the Phenom are very quiet on 12v and push a nice bit of air. Fan cable molex with options included in basket.

4GB RAM, don't imagine she'll need more?

And added a wireless adapter (the mobos with onboard wifi are too expensive at around £95 and over). Chose that mobo because it has HDMI.

Don't know if you require an optical drive or have one you can use to install Windows.

What about a laptop?

she has one, but as i use and know my way round desktop pc's i find them easier to fix, upgrade etc and i'd imagine you get a faster pc for the money. I also don't want to be constantly cleaning it, and i find budget laptops can grind to a halt in a short space of time, so i'm hoping with a desktop this won't happen.

Something a little bit different here. This is basically an updated rig of the build I did for my mum a few months back.

The case seems quite good, it looked like this when it was built.

what will the pc be used for?

Would be good to know this.

If it's just for Facebook/email/Youtube etc. then I'd consider installing Debian or Mint instead of Win 8; you'll save a decent amount of cash, and never have to worry about her PC getting infested with viruses because she clicked on a dodgy link.

Well worth considering, or one of the Intel NUC alternatives.
