Rental market, stupidly competitive

Of the folk I know Dennistoun seemed to fit the bill quite well.

Can't remember exactly what they are paying for a 3 bedroom in sword street but it seemed nice enough and close enough to walk to George square, has got train stations and parking outside.

Agreed it was quite a bugger in Glasgow when I was looking! Private lets are possibly a good option(I've heard Glasgow pad is a good website)

try looking slightly further east from Dennistoun, especially if you own a car (dennistoun is not a great place to park)

carntyne has some nice new builds up for rent just off Rigby st same with shettleston on and just off old shettleston rd. neither are what you would call fantastic places but slightly cheaper than Dennistoun (Merchant City East if your a berk-had a few people ask me to take them there ) which itself isn't all that great

Place opposite mine, same design etc, wants £850 a month rent. This is for a 2 bedroom flat basically, where the 2nd room is not that large (would fit double bed but not much else).

I think they are crazy for wanting so much, but maybe they will get someone on those terms lol. £700-£750 a month is probably fairer...

My dad does buy to let's and has a flat available (Pretty sure it's still available but can check if needed)

Not in Glasgow but in Coatbridge, 2 minute walk from Coatdyke train station which goes directly to both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I've had the same issue for quite sometime. Luckily things worked out for me in the end. It's rather as you described btw, check online constantly and call on the moment. Better yet do not to snap at agents when they don't show up on appointments and ask them gently to call you when something similar becomes available (I know, very hard)

When I moved to switzerland it took nearly 5 months before I got a place to rent. This involved checking the websites every morning at 7am to get new listings, visiting the properties at 8am before tenants went to work, and then visiting the rental office at 9am to put my name on the waiting list to find ther were already 50 others on the list that were magicked into existence despite me being the first to see the property. Sometimes I would turn up and there would be 6-10 other people waiting at 8:30 for a flat viewing at 9am on its first viewing day.

When I moved to oregon they were so desperate they paid my first months rent and knock $200 off the rental price!

Is the issue that you need to up your budget or that other people on the same budget are getting the property first? I've no idea whether this will work but if I were in a similar position I'd go to a couple of local letting agents and offer them a finders fee for getting you to see it first (and on condition you take it). Also be prepared to drop everything and view it within a few hours.

While one view on this is that you shouldn't need to pay this "bribe" (and I agree), the other view is that you are employing an expert in the area to source a property for you.

I've asked a couple now if I can offer up an incentive but they've refused.

I'm absolutely sickened by the situation. Just don't know what to do.

It's only Tuesday and that's 3 viewings so far this week that have been cancelled because they've already been taken. A flat came online this afternoon, I phoned and booked for tomorrow at 1pm....Just had a call saying it's gone... People must seriously be taking them without viewing. Absolutely shocking situation to be in.

Is there anyway I can put money down to take something off the market before viewing it...then if I don't like it, get my money back?

There's something not right with how quickly these are going, either people are pulling the same stunt or everyone is in the same desperate position and just taking the properties with no prior viewing.

When I was last looking I viewed something the day it hit the market and in the time it took us to walk from the viewing back to the estate agent to say we want it a deposit had already been put down :(

I recently let my flat out in the west end, had the same tenant for about 6 years so thought I would put it on gumtree - can only sympathise with the op, I had about 50 odd replies within a day!
Due to my situation I had to do a couple of group bookings and that was horrible, I can only imagine how bad it was for the folk looking!
I said to them to email me if they wanted it and I had loads of people asking if they could pay more just to get it!
wouldn't do that to anyone tho, was tempted for a second...

when are you looking to move shifty and what's your budget?
sister has a place in dennistoun that she may be renting out soon

I'm moving to Christchurch NZ in less than a month, after the earthquake it's mental trying to find a place to rent or buy, no supply and tons of people looking. Somehow the gods smiled upon us and my girlfriend managed to snag us a 3 bedroom (two of those rooms en suite) in a secure complex complete with guard, a stone throw from the park and close to all amenities for £800 a month. The estate agent said that she had over 2000 emails and 'hundreds' of phone calls offering to take the property without even viewing. Why did we get it? Her kids will be going to my gf's class this coming school year :D

I sympathise with you. I went through the same last year. Then just as I had signed a new 6 month rental agreement I found the perfect place that I wanted to buy(!). Had to buy out of the last few months of the contract, expensive, but sadly necessary. Finding a place to rent was a pain though, coupled with the fact that most rental places are pretty darned rubbish!

Ive not experienced it like that since I was living in Brighton. Up here in Gloucestershire things seem a little slower. On Saturday I went round the agents booking viewings for today. Went and looked at them, picked my favourite, wandered down to the relevant agent's office and put my holding deposit down. Maybe you city folk should calm down. Although the other week a flat went literally as I rang up to book a viewing (the agent told me his colleague was just processing it) but it had been on for a week already...
